It Is a mistake In bcroes whenever
Ibey neglect to bo lU feet In height.
Two men met In the publication office
of n New York magazine Tor which
both had agreed tb write articles. They
were Introduced to eaoh other and 1
watched them very Interestedly became j
they were General Grant and. Uenernl
Ileauregard.
The visible splendors of war had de-
parted from them with their uniform
and their civilian coats were even glossed
by wear In spots where gold lace onee
had shone. Grant walked heavily with
a cane never having entirely recovered
from the hurt to his hip In a last Christ-
ian night fall on an Icy sidewalk.
Ills hair and whiskers had the shape
made familiar by hi portraits hut his
lowncss of stature Vtas deplorable be-
came he was rather slouchy anil fat as
well. Ho looked more like a plain matter-of-fact
merchant than the foremost
general of a great war.
Heauregard's head was all that could
have been desired by an admirer for It
hadjclose-cropped white halrn mustache
and Imperial of the same .hue and the
outlines of a military model; but be
needed six Indies uioro of body and legs
In order to Insplroany sense or grnnileur.
Did they fall Into heated antagonism
as champions of once supposed hosts.
Not at all. They did not so much as
discuss the struggle; calmly. Their
tonlo was Grant's lamenes which he
said he did not ever expect to get rid of
anil ileauregnrd's rheumatism which
he ascribed to the changeable northern
climate.
Grant Invited Ileauregard to call nit
him and Ileauregard replied that ho
would be delighted to do so nil In the
manner of men who might or might not
mean It. There were only two remarks
whlcii remotely had reference to the re-
bellion. "I don't seo that 5 oil hite changed
imii'li In iO years" said Grant
I have always believed that my cam-
paigning illd uic n world of good phy-
alenlly" replied Ileauregard.
A Husslan Prose) Poem.
I ilrenmi'd that I stepped Into it vast
subterranean highly-arched hall. A
subterranean vast .light Illuminated It.
In the middle of this hall was sealed
the majestic figure of n woman clothed
In a green robe that fell lu many folds
around her. Her head rested upon her
hand; she seemed to be sunk In deep
meditation.
Instantly I compiehcnded that this
woman must be Nature herself and n
sudden feeling of respectful terror stolo
I lit t my awed soul.
. I approached the woman anil saluting
her with reverence I cried "Oh. Mother
or us allien what dost thou meditate ?
ThlnkcHt thou perchance of the future
late of humanity? orof I lie path along
which mankind must Journey In order
tonttnlntho greatest possible perfec-
tion the highest happiness!"
threatening eyes upon me. Jler lips
moveti. ami in a iremeniious meiniiio
voice alio replied :
i was pondering now to uestow
greater strength upon thu muscles of
Hie Ilea's legs so that It may the more
easily escape from Its enemies. The bal-
ance betwixt attack and lllght Is de-
ranged It must be readiisled."
"Whatr"' I stammered "Is that thy
only meditation Are not we mankind
thy liesl-luved and most precious chil-
dren?" The woman sllifhtlv bent her brows
and replied: "All living creatures aro
my children ; I cherish all equally and
annihilate all without distinction!''
"Hut Virtue lfeason Justice!" I
fuller) d.
"Those nrehuman words!" renlled the
brazen voice. "1 know neither good nor
evil. Itenson to me Is no law! and what
Is Justice? 1 gave thee lire I tnke It
from the'o and give It unto others; worms
or men all are the same to mo.
And thou must maintain thyself mean-
while nnd leave mo In peace!"
I would have replied but the earth
quaked and trembled and I awoke.

Maidens" AgafhsTwirlo wo.
In the records of the olllce or the Sec-
retary of Statu at Columbia. South Car-
olina I the following petition bearing
date 173:1 addressed to the Governor of
South Carolina and signed by sixteen
maidens:
"The humble petition of all the maids
whoso names are underwritten:
"Whereas we the humble petitioners
nre at present In a very melancholy con-
dition of mind considering how all the
bachelor aro blindly captured by wid-
ows und we nre (hereby neglected; In
consequence of this our request is that
jour JCxcellcncy will for the ruture
order that no widow presume to marry
any young man until the maids are pro-
vided for or else to pay each of them u
tine for satisfaction uf Invading our lib-
erties and likewise n line to be levied
on all bachelors as shall be married to
widows The great disadvantage It Is
to maids Is that the widows by their
forward carriage do snap up the young
men and have the vanity to think their
merits beyond ours whloh Is a great
Imposition to us who ought to have the
preference. This Is humbly recom-
mended to your Excellency's considera-
tion and we hope you will permit no
further Insults. And we poor maids In
duty bound will ever pray etc."
