Inspector of the postolllce department
to-night arrested Willis T. Sheats n
colored employe of the Galveston post-
olllce on a chnrge of complicity In aid-
ing and abetting J. II. Young lately an
employe In the postolllce In embezzling
money irom tetters anu parcels xottng
was arrested nt Houston on the night of
November 18 as he was about to lake
the train. Sheats Is an old and trusted
employe and his arrest surprised the
other attaches. The United States
grand Jury to-day returned an Indict-
ment ugalnst Young and Sheats on a
charge of robbing the mall.
Atlanta November 23. A mass meet
ing of colored citizens to-night consid-

spoke. He said the two races would
now be brought nearer together and
would understand each other better than

men that their rights would be guarded

concerning the epidemic In Wise Lee
Dickinson nnd lluchanan counties are
heartrending. On Guests river. Wise
county within n radius of four miles
are 30 cases of disease In one Instance
the father motberand six children died.
Many persons die for want of attention.
Business Is suspended all being con-
cerned with the sick and dying. Six
persons w ere burled In one graveyard In
one day. The disease Is assuming a
milder form In some localities. Not less
llinn 17f of the best citizens or Wise
county have died during the last few
days. The disease made Its appearance
In Lee county and several deaths oc-
curred. More worthy people never
called more loudly for relief than these.
They need nurses medicines and n com-
mittee of intelligent physicians to diag-
nose the disease and stop Its terrible
march.

wns an unqualified success and this may
be said to bo due to President Olln and
Mr. Charles H. Calvert the energetic
Secretary. The accommodation afforded
for visitors Is excellent Iho grand stand
being ono of the roomiest structures on
any race-course. Tlio tracks too were
all that could bo desired being In line
condition. Yesterday there were as-
sembled nearly DOOO people and before
the bell had rung for thellrst event there

in their box at 2:13. and after three false

Death ot An Old Citizen.
Mr. Eugene Pbllllppl and old citizen
of ban Antonio and for many years con
nected with Major Kampman's large
building operations as superintendent
died yesterday afternoon after several
weeks Illness from typhoid fever. He
leaves'a wife and several children. He
was a member of the lodge of Sons of
Herman jvniguts ot Honor anu Aioert
Sidney Johnston Camp Confederate
Veterans. The remains will be Interred
tins afternoon at 3:30 o'clock.
