Tiieue does not aeem to be nny con-
flicting report! regarding Sir. Hutlcr's
vote.
Election returns from polnta In Texas
ecm to be quite slow nnd no reliable
estimates can as yet be made
Silt river Is pretty well crowded Just
now with a line lot of fellows represent-
ing most any slide of political opinion.
All the news this morning point to
Mr. Cleveland as being on top wblch
makes It exceedingly chilly for .Mr.Dlnlno
Noivrox and Jones seem to have got
lost In tbe scrimmage at least they
have left no address as to tbelr where-
abouts. In all the election news the Republi-
cans seem to be gaining Congressmen
and the Democratlo majority of "Sin tlie
last House will be very considerably less.
Tub question now Is would Judge
Hector have made any better rase If he
had unconditionally accepted the Re-
publican nomination? He did not keep
up with the People's ticket In Iiexar
county by a large majority.
The Democrats ere extremely Incon-
sistent. In Michigan they patohed up
a coalition with the Qreenbackers and
actually ran a Fusion ticket but In
Texas an Independent Democrat Is
branded as a traitor and a Republican
in disguise by the Bourbon newspapers.
In New York they bugged tho recalcit-
rant Republicans to their bosom and
gorged them with taffy; they fondled
voressed and bepralsed Carl Sohurz the
great political adventurer but Wash
Jones was the "abomination of abomi-
nations" to Texas Bourbons.
'i'liK election reports have been ex-
tremely exasperating and puzzling even
to the most sedate citizens but they
have nearly crazed the professional
newsmonger whose meat and bread Is
news. There has been n see saw In the
reports a sort of sleight of band now
you see now you don't style very try-
ing to exuanlmlty of temper and steadi-
ness of nerves. Neither Democrats nor
Republicans lelt exactly safe In giving
way to gush and enthusiasm so that
there has been a labored repression of
feeling and a determination to await
fuller developments seldom witnessed
during elections. Bluster and brag have
played. The people wanted to seo the
figures and wanted them from the foun-
tain head the offlclul source.
The British mercantile marine is com-
posed of some 21500 vessels Including
3050 steamers with an aggregate meas-
urement of about 0200000 tons while
that of France consists of about 2900
vessels. Including 700 steamers with an
aggregate measurement of 1035000 tons.
The number of steam vessels of war

tion of tbe respective merchant navies

In A paper on "Italian Social l.lfe"
contributed to tbe current number of
the National Review Mr. Galtenga
points out that "tbe great misfortune of
an Italian citizen of the mlddlo class Is
that lie Is a man of few wants. The
lazzaronl Instinct runs through the
wholo race. No ono will do a Job to
earn sevrnprnco so long as he can keep
soul and body together by a Job of six-
pence." Another misfortune Is that
"politics are tho only lucratlvo calling.
Bureaucracy "overruns tho
land 1 1 leu n sworm of locusts.
There . n bn no less than 00000 Govern-
ment iil.l ilnls In Rome alone
Tbopny Is little better than beggary
but the work is ltttla better than make-
believe. There aro twenty men to do
tho work often and twenty more to
hinder It." A third ovll Is that "no-
wlicru In the world Is celibacy uioro
generally tho order of the day than
among tho Italian middle classes. Ills
a law for tho clergy a rule of discipline:
for the land nnd ten forces n necessity
for tho mob of minor ptiblla function-
aries nnd professional men; finally n
matter of fashion for the golden yonlh."
Tut: purity and sanctity of Die ballot
box arc the life ncd soul of nurs) stem of
representathc government nnd for that
reason should be protected nnd pre-
served byndcijualolawsaml regulations.
The purlly of Ihe ballot box rises In Im-
portance far nbovc all mere parly Issues
nnd ought to be regarded ns lying nt the
foundation of our entire system of gov-
ernment nnd deserving of the most
watchful nnd religious protection from
the Legislature. As corruption and
fraud Increase new safeguards must bo
thrown around the ballot box to secure
Its purity. It Is n very mournful rcllec-
tlon that our elections are very fre-
quently decided by Illegal and fraudu-
lent votes since this state of things fore-
shadows the subversion of our system of
government nnd tho ascendency of some
Augustus Cn-sar. In Texas there Is no
registration or voters ns there should
be In order to fence out frnud nnd this
defect should be supplied by the next
Legislature. Tho Inspectors of each
voting precinct should be supplied with
n list of registered voters.
The election of Gov. Ireland Is likely to
prove to tho Texas Democracy a sowing
of dragons teeth hereafter to spring up
nrmed men. The opposition manifested
to li I in previous to his nomination as
scotched not killed nnd will prob-
ably break out with Increased violence
like nil pent up Ilres tho moment the
Legislature convenes. Tho fact Is tbe
seeds of disintegration are germinating
In tho bosom of tho Texas Democracy.
Half n dozen Democrats are hungering
and thirsting for the Senatorial togas
worn by Coke and -Mniey and ure on
tho lookout for n chance to trip up Ihe
Senatorial heels of those gentlemen. It
is said Governor Ireland's mouth Is
watering for JIaxy's place nnd that ho
would be glad to make a dash for It.
John Hancock seems to be on n stlllhunt
for It. The young Democracy mean to
push themselves to tlio front and crowd
Mills. Reagan Culberson etc. oll'of the
political stage. Tho tariff question bids
fair to split tbe Democracy asunder.
Hut for the 1'resldental election being
on hand It would hnvo occasioned u
split this year. The very territorial
extent of Texas Is bound at no reuioto
day to cause a spilt In Its ranks. Tho
futuro brlst'es Willi perils to the Demo-
crats. It will be u b'essed dav for
tho material progress of Texas
when Bourbon Democrats are sent to
Coventry nnd liberal anil progressive
men a.e placed In the lend. This event
is sure to nappen ere long anu me
sooner it occurs the better for Texas.
Sol'mi policy nnd common sense ought
never to be spurned nnd disregarded In
the location of the line of n railroad even
to secure the Imaginary advantages of
an nlr line between two given points.
For n road to thrive nnd prosper. It must
commnnd sotno business all along Its
line Instead of relying entirely upon
through freight nnd travel between lis
terminal points. Tho Aransas road
will constitute no exception to this gen-
eral inle hence It would bo supremely
absurd to attempt to tun It upon an nlr
line when to do so would .throw It
through it sterile country sparsely set-
tled nnd chiefly devoted to pnstttrnge
and therefore unable to afford any busi-
ness to tho road. Besides the Aransas
road must procure material aid all a!ong
Us line In order that It may be con-
structed 'Ibis Is n matter of prime Im-
portance to the completion of the road.
Chief Engineer I'olk gives It ns his opin-
ion that tho lino on the cast side of the
San Antonio river while somewhat the
longest would travcrso tho richest nnd
most populous country and probably
bilng to the road the largest amount of
material aid nnd bis opinion is doubt-
less well founded nnd Is entitled to
great weight. Tbe fact Is all who pos-
sess any personal knowledge of the sec-
tion between San Antonio nnd Aran-
sas concur In this opinion and
have heretoforo expressed them-
selves to that effect In the most
deoldcd manner. The dlreetory
should not sacrifice the success of tho
scheme to secure the Imaclnnrv advan
tages of an air line through a grazing
and unsettled countrv. Under the cir
cumstances a delleotfon from an nlr lino
Is an absolute necessity. The road must
secure material niu in money innu anu
cross ties along Us line. The towns of
iloresvllle Uoliiul. etc. will doubtless
nld the road liberally In case It should
be located near them while the land
owners would subscribe land and errant
the right of way both of which would
be of essential benefit. The counties
throucb which the road would run
would act wisely were they to snb-
sctlbe to tho road since It would add to
their population and wealth very consid-
erably. It la to be hoped the directors
will appoint commissioners to canvass
tbe intermediate country for subscrip-
tions In land and money and to piocure
? rants of the right of way. Florcsvllle
lelcna and Goliad should be also can-
vassed and induced to subscribe as lib-
erally as possible. Farmers would be
gainers In tbe end were they to sub-
scribe one-third of their lands to tbe
road for tbero Is no doubt the construc-
tion of the road would treble the value
of their lands Independently of the In-
creased facilities they would enjoy of
getting their produce to market. The
firoper course Is to "strike while tbe Iron
t hot" while tho people are excited
about the road. Tbe directors should
act with promptitude and energy and
not suffer tbe railroad to drag along.
Fcmolo Speculators.
r'lOtu (ho Drooklyn Utile.
A Wall street broker remarked the
oibcrdny: "H'omennre the most reckless
gamblers In the world. I never knew
one to come out ahead speculating In
Wall atrcet for they never know when
to let go. As speculators however
they have ten times the nerve of men
and they stand their losses with extra-
ordinary fortitude. A striking Instance
of tho hold which gambling gains on
nny ono occurred tbe other day. A wo-
man came Into my ofllce about 1 o'clock
In the afternoon and asked to see me on
n matter of Importance. I went out
to her nnd found she had trav-
eled nil tho way down from Spring-
field Mass. for the purpose of Invest-
ing some money. She took a bank
book out of her bosom and showed me
that tbe had a deposit of $1000. While
1 wns talking to her It occurred to me
sovernl times that her face wns familiar
but I found It was Imposslblo to place
her. Finally I asked her nnd she seemed
greatly surprised that I had forgotten
she recalled the fact that she came to
my ofllco nearly twelve years ago with
$20UO nnd began to speculate bho had
made $10000 within two weeks and
then suddenly got caught In a flurry nnd
wns completely wiped out. She lost
every cent Hint she had. She went back
Id Sprlnglleld nnd hero she Is
again ready to blow In tho rest
of her savings. During nil these
twelve yenrs sbo has saved the
money carefully and every day she
has read tbe stock reports In tbe news-
papers. She has followed the market
carefully nnd her Ideas aro sound enough
on stocks but there Is nochanco of her
winning. Four tbousand dollars won't
f;o far when you speculate with It In big
minis and the least little turn of tho
market Is likely to send her back to
Sprlnglleld penniless. This case re-
minds me of another one I had about a
year'ago. 1 was going out of my ofllco
about 1 o'clock In the afternoon on my
wny home when I became awaro that
there was a woman sitting In one of the
ofllce cbnlrit staring blankly out ot
the window. 1 remembered that she
had been there for; two or three
hours nnd tnado tome Inquiries. I
found that she was n boarding house
keeper up town nnd a very estimable
and deserving womnn. Sbo bad by
hard work succeeded In saving $1000
nnd had listened to tho persuatlons of
one of her boarders n youngstock clerk
and had come down to my ofllce and
speculated. The money that the had
been years scraping together wns lost
In a day. I almost made up my mind
then never toopernte for a woman again.
But whnt'a the use? If 1 don't do it
tome ono else will nnd tbe 'commisli'
f;oesnswelI wllh me ns unjone. At
east I think so."
