An Interesting chnpter.oh Earth-
quakes? ? R..-
From the New Orleans Ttmos-Ilcmocrat.
New York teems to have been quite
shaken up over Iti earthquake and not
n tittle proud of It. Viewed bowerer
from the standpoint of other earthquakes;
It was a very amall affair at least ai far
an we have heard from.for It may be that
this slcsmodlo wave came from omo cen-
tre whero grcaterdamage baa been done.
It Is not forgotten that a very similar
earthquake. occurred In tho tame States
and cities; somewhat oyer a century ago
and tt was month afterward before
New York learned that the trembling It
had felt was a wave from a great earth-
quake which 6000 miles away precipi-
tated the greater portion of the city of
Lisbon Tortugal Into the tea and In
the abort apaco of six minutes destroyed
100000 persons.
The Eastern and Middle States-tho
regions visited by Sunday's earthquake
are for more subject to such move
ments than Is generally Imagined. I here
bave been 227 chronicled In Boston In
the last two centuiles. but ot these a
majority have been1 so " slight that the
people themselves were unaware of
them and they were only delected by
sclentlflo Instruments.
The most severe of these have been
tho earthquakes or 1770 1S70 known
as tho Quebec earthquake and that of
Sunday none of whloh killed anybody
or did any greater Injury than knock-
Ing over a few fences and chimneys.
nevt uncans uaa ueen niiogetucr jrco

sippi Valley suffered severely In tho
New Madrid earthquake of 1811 which
was coincident with the great earth-
quake of Caracas S. A. and which
caused tho sinking (if largo bodies of
land nnd the ruin of farms and planta-
tions In Southern Missouri nnd Arkan-
sas. The l'aclllc elope of all portions or tlio
United States Is tbe most subject to
these selsmodlo upheavals and has been

been destroyed either by earthquakes or
by tbo glgantlo sea waves caused by
them.
In Europe Italy is the home of earth-
quakes and thonsands of lives have been
lost there by them. Sicily has frequent-
ly been agitated by n thousand or mora
shocks In one year.
Messina In that island was destroyed
In 1873 with a loss or 150000 lives; Lis-
bon In 1755 with 00000 lives; but tbe
greatest of all earthquakes that of An-
tloch the most latal the world has ever
known killed In that one city a quarter
of a million persons.
As to selsmodlo theories and the cause
of these disturbances there are so tunny
and an 01 tnern are so uouoiiui mat inoy
are scarcely worth giving. In relation
to shocks In this country It has been
nearly always observed that they are
off-shoots waves from some greater
commotion of the earth elsewhere;
hence we should wait with anxiety
news rrom some quarter or tue gioue
for It would bo no surprise to hear that
at tbe same moment that New York-
was shaken on Sunday some frightful
and fatal disturbance occurred else-
where. A Big" Disgust
