MISREPRESENTATION.
MEETING OF BRITISHERS
STRUVE'S HALL.
AT
A Report of the Meeting -Names of
Speakers-Resolution Passed
Condemning Dr. Kingsbury.
Last evening at Struve's ball a meet-
ing of Kngllsh emigrants was held to
further coin Ider the quest Ion of mlsrcp-
rcscntntlon madoby Dr. Kingsbury at
to the advantages of Texas. The meet-
lng was well Attended and tlio audience
was of a higher character than that
which assembled at Souimer's garden
although the elements of dlncord
were not wanting and would
have quickly showed disorder liail It not
have been restrained by n firm hand.
Henry llyder-Taylor called the meet-
ing to order and asked that n Chairman
be nominated. The name ol Mr. Haley
was suggested and that gentleman was
elected unanimously.
After taking Ids sent Mr. "llnley
brlelly stated the nature of the meeting
anil said lie would bo glad to hear
from any of the audience who desired
to address Ihe meeting. Mr. Iredale ap-
proached llio Chairman's table and spoke
to the meeting at length. He made sev-
eral animadversions upon the report
that appeared In the I.rfliiT which he
was pleased to call an unfair and partial
report. He then severely criticised Dr.
Kingsbury's pamphlets reading cxtraots
which he claimed were utter falsehoods.
Henry llyder-Taylor then made a
nflpph. iliirfnir which hn was reneatedlv
annlauded. Mr. Coon
Cooper followed Mr.
Taylor and opposed the Idea that Kings
HK8-
uui
had misrepresented the country; ho
wished to impress tne auuience ne was
essentially a satlslled Kngllshmnn. Mr.
IV. Mullens also spoke Invincibly stating
that he had heard the wonderful tale of
Ihe question of misrepresenta
tion.
Mr. Costello then had the floor and
pertinently said he was surprised to see
all this discussion In this country.
Messrs. Cumberland Painter Corner
Jr. and Jackson also made speeches
supporting the assertions of those who
stated Kingsbury was guilty of misrep-
resentation of falsity.
A resolution was then made and sec-
onded to the effect that the charges
brought against Doctor Kingsbury
of misrepresentation had been fully
sustained and a committee with power
to add to their number was formed of
the following gentlemen: Mr. Haley
Mr. K. flrench-Mullens Mr. Henry Ity-der-Taylor
Mr. Y. Holland Mr. K.
Dlmallne. Before putting this resolu-
tion to the vote Mr. Haley made a most
amusing and racy speech of his expe-
rience In Texas the dry humor
of the speaker keeping the audience In
a continual state of laughter. The reso-
lution was then unanimously carried
and the meeting by votes of thanks
being tendered to the Chairman Mr.
Kropr the hall proprietor and the rep-
resentatives of the press.
SAN ANTONIO RIVER.
The Weeds and the Sewers-The
Sudden Bath.
During the 'week the San Antonio
river has been undergoing the process
of belngoleansed from the great quantity
of weeds that nave grown In luxuriance
Two Lioht representatives took

town the river to see tho progress that
was being made In "this respect and to
make any other notes that would be
likely to prove of interest to the readers
of tho Lioht.
The aforesaid representatives did not
find much to take notice of the

of amusement which at Intervals they
take advantage of by trying to catch the
specimens of the finny tribe that make
the river their habitat with the original

by the people of "far Cathay" for ages

great number of sluices sewers that
pour their filth anil refuse Into the river;
of these between Houston street bridge

thirty-three. A faint estimate may

The Facts.
Mr. George Kalteyer Secretary of the

scription reeelved from a ''prominent
business man for $23000" to his knowl
edge. The "prominent business man's'
name Is not on the books opposite that
amount. It Is learned also that although
there has been a good deal said of
uoionei .urecicenriuge's liberality in sub-
scrlblns stock that not a cent has vet
been set down on tbe books opposite
his name. Whjle the Light Is grieved
to learn theso facts and would like to

that tbe fact should be known whether

to see how the publication of a "manu-

ground that It was all true.
