The wit of dubbing the Gatrciton News
the ''Old Lid;" it to very atlenualcil as to be
imperceptible to ordinary mortals. One mult
have second sight to appreciate it.
Tlilt authorities at Dallas are waging a
vig rousar upon the gamblers. One man
wsi found guilty by a juiy and fined $ Ico and
cosis and there yet remains about loo cases
against him.
Six months hence when the fence cullers
begin to ply tluir nippers on the political wire
fence of Governor Ireland and lit a endorsers
in the Legislature the air will be full of
music but it will be hark from the tombs.
Longfellow said: "Let the dead pan
bury its dead" and even Solomon never
uttered a wiser saying. The trouble with the
Bourbons is that they ignore the advice of
Longfellow and refu.e to bury the dead past.
Thi speech of Senator Houston fails to
offer any solution of the problem ol fence
cutting Ite does not seem to know exactly
where to light and is hovering in the air until
he can alight safely on one side or the other.
It is beginning to dawn upon the Legisla
ture that Ihey cannot make an appropriation
for the New Orleans exposition out of other
funds however much they may desire to go
behind the constitution. The great Slate cf
Teias will have to be represented by private
subscription and enterprise.
Free grass hasbeen the cause of much of
the disturbed condition of affairs in Western
Texas and Senator Terrsll was more than
two-thirds right when he said maay n
Texas had grown rich on lands belonging to
Ike school children of the State. Free grass
as understood by the events of Ike past 1:
simply legalized theft on a broad scale.
According to a writer in the National
Live Stock Journal il present prices of wool
contiaue to rule a mijonty ol the wool grow
ers in the States of Michigan Ohio TYIscon
sin Pennsylvania. West Virginia and Nev
York will co out of the business. Imnnrtt
have doubled since the reduction of the tariff
and of course prices have declined. On v
uable land sheep raising for wool docs not
pay. i he grievance ol wool men is Pennine
and the fight for their relief will be pushed
zealously in the House.
The position of the two Democratic pspcrs.
the News and Print of Galveston respecting
the tariff aptly illustrates the confusion worse
confounded existing in the Democratic party
upon the tariir. The News Is free trade re'
gardless of consequents while the print is
for protection and hangs its banner upon th
outer wall yet these two papers are printed
in the same city almost in sight of each
other. We have holy writ for the saying that
a "house that is divided egainit itself cannot
stand."
IT is said the sleep of half the members of
the Legislature is broken and disturbed by
noises resembling the sound of nippers cut-
ting barbed wire and that the want of sleep
gives them a haggsrd and woe begone sort of
look painful to contemplate. The next Legii
lature will be conspicuous for the omission
a large majority of the members of th
present one but their absence will not create
an aching void nor deraoge seed time an
harvest.
"Flat-doodle" is fast driving taffy out of
the market and is having a great run with pol'
iticians and sensational newspapers. The
bloody shirlers North and South deal largely
fa " flapdoodle " Indeed it constitutes their
stock in trade. The "Solid South" is the
result pf waving the No.-thero "bloody shirt.
Captain Marvin is the author of the terra
ipdoodle" and he denned it to mean
food fur fools." But for dosing the people
illy with " flapdoodle" sectionalism with
lis silly prejudices would loccr sinco have
iven up the ghost.
1r is given out" sayj the New Yoik
World "that Speaker John Griffin Carlisle is
coming over to New York to eat dinner with
our Free Trade dab. We assumo that
Speaker Carlisle is too busy to be movlrg
about the ceunlry exhlbilinr; himself as a
gastronomer leastwise we hope so. He can
certainly be engaged at present in a more
profitable investment of time than dining
with a Free Trade club. lie should confine
himself to the old-fashioned Democratic din-
ners provided by Mrs. Carlisle In Washington
nd permit Frank Hurd and Mills of Texas
eat all the free Hade dinners that are sup
posed to be due to the lower branch of
Congress."

Tiif. best thing a young man can do is to
fall in love with a pure-minded sirtuoas and
libit girl. Even should he not succeed In
inning her affection his passion fct her will
o him immense service. It will lift him
above th: "dead level" of selfishness and pre-
serve him from vicious courses and low de-
baucheries. Selfishness Is the "sin that dulh
most easily beset" men and women and when
once seizes upon them generosity friend
ship charity and sympathy take their fl'ght.
When a young man truly loves a pure and
virtuous woman he has this very love a
charm and talisman against vice which is as
coat of mail to the warrior on the fi:lJ of
battle and as a compass to the tempest tailed
sailor on the ocean. As Tennyson sings
"It Is better to hnvo loved and lost
Than nocr to ha. c loved at ull."
While we consider the bill introduced by
Senator Terrell objectionable in many respects
particularly on account of its complexities and
knots and its squin'ing towards a herd law
the Light has no pleasure in the spectacle
a man of real ability (far such is Senator
Terrell) being picked and pecked at by a par-
cel of interlur men. whose chief motive is
envy and jealousy of his superiority. Senator
Terrell must be sacrificed in order that
Nood'cdom may sleep in peace and that
mediocrity may continue to respire. If such
was not the groundwork of the opposition to
the bill of Senator Terrell the opponents of
the bill would have attempted to amend it
here they believed it to be defective.
I hi Legislature has done nothing so tar
solve the fence cutting problem. The
members appear to be suffering from chronic
flatulence and unless they are promptly re-
lieved it is likely the legislature will end in a
mignificcnt fizzle.
Mr. Thomas II. Howard a gentleman
well known in tho newspaper circles of this
city died jcslerday by his own hand. While
his head was white and his body was bent
and frail yet it was caused more by disease
and suffering than by age. His life had been
an eventlul one. His early hiitory was
marked by great activity both in the Irgal pro'
fession and as a writer. His con'ributinns
have been published in all the leading pub!
ealions of the country and of the great
amount of literary work he accomplished he
claimed no credit nor asked for no reputation
There are men high in public life to-day who
one much of their success to his brain in
shaping the events ol their career. Success'
ful in his early life in business he had made
and lost three fortunes and until afflicted by
disease he had no knowledge of the value of
money. He was a man strong in his
prejudices and firm in his friendships.
Although racked and tortured by disease he
frequently informed the writer that he ought
to live 20 years longer and one can but pity
and forgive the irresolution that caused him
to deiire to plunge into the unknown before
his time. Hut he was not in love with life
and to quote Icgersoll "He had not passed
on life's highway the stone that marks the
highest point but being weary for a moment
he lay down by the wayside and using his
burden for a pillow fell into that dreamless
sleep that kisses down his eyelids still." His
faith was Spiritualism and if he finds that
peace and contentment among good and
kindred spirits he will have solved theproblci
of death. Peace to his ashes.
