. SUICIDE.
THOMAS H. HOWARD IS FOUND DEAD
YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.
Letters Left by the Deceased-Ills Heller In
Rplrltuallsm-Formerly a Distinguished
Lawyer In New Orleans.
Yesterday afternoon Mr Thomas Howard
committed suicide at kit room on Navarro
street. It appears that the Rev. Mr. IVeston
pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian church
had for sosae time taken a deep interest in the
old gentleman. lie called at hit room
knocked received no response and on push-
ing open the door found poor old Howard
apparently asleep. He endeavored to arouse
him bat this proved unavailing for the af-
flicted old geotlemin mult have taken his
ease of life tome hoars before the minister's
arrival. A bottle of morpioe was lound on a
table tear his bed side. It was partially
drained and Iht circumstance explained the
method to which the deceased bad resorted
a order to shuffle off life's burdens. He lay
catray and placidly like a child asleep hav-
Of done with its toys.
lattice Adam was summoned at once and
en reaching the hours an inquest was held
resulting in a verdict that deceased had come
to his death by his own hands in administer-
ing morphine. His body was theu given in
charge ef Mr. W. O. Lsngdon of the firm of
Lsngdon Greenlty & Co. on Austin street
who had it prepared for burial the Express of
this city taking chsrge of the funeral and
making all arrangements therefor.
The deceased was a figure on our slreels.
His patriarchal face with long flowing white
betrd and steel gray hair that clustered pro
fusely to his shoulders his bent form and
plerclag glance his person always cleanly and
leatly attired will be recalled by many who
passed him daily on our streets and would
involuntary turn to question as to who he was.
He came from New Orleans some three
years ago and oa reaching here was shortly
after employed on the LiailT where he
worked for somethiog more than a year.
After this he was employed on the Express
and remaiaed sa up to the time of his death.
He had formerly been a lawyer in New
Orleans of considerable distinction and had
it is said once occupied a judicial position.
With a ready pen he had been prominent ia
politics and more thaa one ol the political
speeches which stirred Louisiana after the war
have emanated from the deceased. Besides
this his taste for literature was peculiarly re-
fined he was conversant with the best anthors
and kept abreast of the best modern writers.
His own contributions to some of the leading
igiilncs of the day show talent and versa
tility though he never wrote for fame or ap
plause. He made few intimate friends. He
was averse to obtruding himself or his reminis
cences upon others. He had been for years
suffering with asthma. To alleviate this
malady he came to San Antonio. Finding
very little relief he became depressed and
doubtless while laboring under one of these
attacks be rashly threw away bis life. He
eaves a wife and four children in New
Orleans.
He left few papers open for inspection
though among them were several. This to
the Coroner:
"This is involuntary. No suicide can be
an act of my will. Hut no stomach pumps
Mr. Coroner. If a man cannot live it should
be his privilege to die."
TO rtlACHIRS.
'Preach the spiritual man man with hia
spiritual faculties uncovered to the liiends of
trie human race in the skies. It hat no
friends among wordly spirits. The spiritual
man will soen manliest and enter an appear-
ance upon earth. Misery crime and toil will
cease. There is no labor for a man to do in
this life but qualify himself to be spiritually
born in his celestial home. There is no
human want that has not been provided for
by tneuivtne Author 01 xlstence. when
supply (alia it is owing to conditions. When
man ahall learn to live under the tpiritual lawa
and in the keeping of the litnehcicnt friend
over him it will never fall."

In a conversation with a Light reporter
this morning Mr. W. O Laogdon stated he
had telegraphed yesterday afternoon te Mr.
A. G. Brice an old friend of the deceased
residing in New Orleans and askltg what
disposition should be aaade of the remains.
A telegram in response was received regret-
ing Mr. Howard's death but stating that he
(Brice) had received no Instructions. Mr.
Brice is one of the leading attorneyt of the
Crescent City and he had last summer written
to Mr. Langdoa recounting his friendship for
the deceased and saying that should Mr
Howard require any reasonable pecuniary aid
t advance it and draw on him. This Mr.
Langdon had occasion te do in small sunt
aggregating pethaps $15 and his draft wai
duly honored.
The trunks of which the deceased speaks
were always a hobby with him He was at-
tached to them he guarded them with
miser's care and they were iaseperable
from hiaa. It it now letrned that
these trunks contain the old gen
tleman's literary legacy. They are his
memoranda of a scholarly and observant life
which he declined to pablish while livlog but
which he tome time ago had made arrange
ments with Mr. Brice to collate in book form
and publish after his death for the benefit of
his family.
So perishes from earth by his own hand all
that was mortal of Thomas II. Howard. He
was a believer in spiritualism and has by
this time solved more thaa " saint sae or
sophist ever writ." II In his last act he erred
greatly let it be remembered that greatly too
he suffered. Chattering daws of men may
peck curiously at him. His self-slaaghter
will be called cowardice by some yet Charity's
veil csn welt be drawn here in the words ef
Burns
"What's dono wo often can compute
Yet know not what's resisted."
His latter life was one of peaury sometimes
bordering on want; his body was bent with
physical suffering and there was little here to
attract him. May his shade find peace and
rest.
The deceased was buried at 2 o'clsck from
his room on Navarro street.
