SEC. 2. The management and control of the public schools of
the said Athens Independent School District is hereby vested in
the present board of trustees of the Athens Public Schools who
shall serve as trustees of.the said district until their successors
sall be elected and qualified as provided by General Law for
independent school districts.
SEC. 3. The said Athens Independent School District as created
by this Act, shall have and exercise and is hereby vested
with all the rights, powers, privileges and duties of an independschool
district incorporated under the General Laws of this
State, and the board of trustees of the said district shall have
and exercise all the rights, powers, privileges and duties conferred
and imposed by the General Laws of Texas upon the trustees
of such school districts incorporated under the General Laws
of the State, except as otherwise provided for in Section 4 of this
Act.
SEC. 4. The trustees of said district shall have the power to
levy and collect an annual ad valorem tax not to exceed one dollar
and fifty cents on the one hundred dollars valuation of taxable
property of the district, for the maintenance of schools
therein, and a tax not to exceed fifty cents on the one hundred
dollars for the purpose of purchasing, constructing, repairing,
or equipping public free school buildings within the limits of
such district, and the purchase of the necessary sites therefor;
provided, that the amount of maintenance tax, together with the
amount of bond tax of the district, shall never exceed one dollar
and fifty cents on the one hundred dollars valuation of taxable
property; and provided further that no such tax shall be levied,
and no such bonds issued, until after an election shall have been
held wherein a majority of the taxpaying voters, voting at said
election, shall have voted in favor of the levying of such tax, of
the issuance of said bonds, or both, as the case may be, and which
election shall be held in accordance with provisions of the General
Laws.
SEC. 5. The city of Athens is hereby divested of any control
and management of the public schools of the said city and the
said control and management of the said public schools are here-
