W.R. Meador
Funeral for William Ray (W.R.)
Meador, 82 of the Pine Grove com-
munity near Jacksonville was at 2
p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at the
Pinnel Chapel CME Church with
the Rev. Joel McCalister, the O.
Mason, the Rev. Robert Christo-
pher, the Rev. William Johnson
officiating. Burial was in the Pine
Grove Cemetery under the direc-
tion of Mercy Funeral Home.
Mr. Meador died Saturday, J une
13 at East Texas Medical Center
Jacksonville. He was born April 1,
1916, in the Pine Grove Commu-
nity. He attended Pine Grove
School, Fred Douglass High School,
Texas College, Texas Southern
University and the University of
Colorado in Boulder.
Professor Meador was a lifelong
Cherokee County resident and a
member of the Pennel Chapel CME
Church. He was a public school
educator, a teacher, principal, part-
time farmer, etc. He earned Bach-
elor of Arts and Master of Arts
degrees and did doctoral study. He
was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa
and was a life-long community
servant with many accolades and
honors while serving his church
and as a leader in the education
lives of children and young people.
He was an organizer, president of
the Jacksonville Farmers Market.
He served honorably in the U.S.
Quarter Master from Nov. 12,1942
to Jan. 31, 1945.
He was preceded in death by his
first wife, Flora Ann Anderson
Meador on June 17, 1977.
Survivors are his wife, Pauline
Stewart Meador of Jacksonville; a
W. R. Meador
son, William Ray Meador Jr. of
Houston; a son-in-law, Vernell
Carter of Arlington; a daughter,
Barbara Carter of Arlington; two
step-daughters, Norma Douglass
of Baytown and Etta Winchester
of Austin; a brother, Cleo Meador
of Jacksonville; a sister-in-law,
Nancy Meador of Jacksonville; 11
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchil-
dren; and one great-great-grand-
child.
Pallbearers were Vernell Carter
II, George L. Mosley, Jimmy L.
Mosley, Odis Earl, Roy G. Mosley,
Ceotis Meador and Gerald Wayne
Porter.
Honorary pallbearers were stew-
ards and trustees of the Pennel
Chapel CME Church, New Com-
munity UMC and Churchill CME
Church.

Funeral for Jimmie Halbert, 82,
of Rusk was at 10 a.m. Saturday in
the Wallace-Thompson Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Davy
Joe Hobson officiating. Burial was
in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Halbert died June 11 in
East Texas Medical Center Rusk.
She was born July 8,1915, in Rusk
and was a life-long Rusk resident.
She was a member of the Mount
Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, Pete Halbert in 1985.

Halbert of Rusk; two brothers and

Sue Ann Cameron
Funeral for Sue Ann Cameron,
60, of Rusk was at 1:30 p.m. Satur-
day at the Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey
Chapel at Waco with Chaplain
Curtis Holland officiating.
Mrs. Cameron died June 11 in a
Waco nursing home. She was born
Jan. 5, 1938, in Dallas, where she
was reared and educated. She was
a longtime Rusk resident. She was
preceded in death by her husband
of 26 years, Don G. Cameron in
1991. She was employed atLufkin
Memorial Hospital as a laboratory
technician for nine years. She pre-
viously worked at St. Joseph's
Hospital in Paris for eight years.
Survivors are her father, James
O. Russell of Montgomery; three
daughters and two sons-in-law,
Karen and Robert Garrett of
Woodway, Terri and Mark Szabo
of Arlington and Ann Cameron of
Woodway; a sister and brother-in-
law, Lynne and Bill Hays of Mont-
gomery; three grandchildren,
Chrisann Cameron, Clara Szabo
and Kathleen Szabo.
Mollie Stokes Estes Wallace
Funeral for Mollie Stokes Estes
Wallace was at noon Tuesday at
the Burks-Walker-Tippit Funeral
Home Chapel in Tyler with the
Rev. David O^Neal officiating.
Burial was at 3:30 p.m. at the
Mount Hospital Cemetery at
Wells.
Mrs. Wallace was born Feb. 20,
1919, to Bessie Lathan and Zack
B. Stokes in the Barsola commu-
nity near Wells. She graduated
from Wells High school in 1936,
then moved to Tyler to attend Fed-
eral Institute. During her lifelong
career as an executive secretary,
she worked for Medical Center
Hospital, Cotton Belt Railroad and
General Electric, where she re-
tired in 1976.
She was a member of the Tyler
Russell
Funeral for Russell Pierce, 71, of
Oakland, was at 10 a.m. Tuesday
at the Oakland Missionary Bap-
tist Church with the Rev. Don
Copeland and the Rev. Richard
Methvin officiating. Burial was in
Oakland Cemetery under the di-
rection of Wallace-Thompson Fu-
neral Home.
Mr. Pierce died June 14 in Tyler
Rehabilitation Hospital. He was
born Oct. 6,1926, in Jacksonville.
He had resided in Oakland for 23
years. Formerly he resided in
Texas City for 16 years. He was a
member of the Oakland Mission-
First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors are two daughters and
sons-in-law, Mollie and Carroll E.
Bobo of Irving and Bettie and Joe
R. Clancy of Flint; a brother, Jack
B. Stokes of Alto; two sisters,
Mildred Holcomb of Rusk and
Mattie Felder of Baytown; four
grandchildren, Amy Tucker of
Dallas, Chris Cox and Jennifer
Cox of Newport Beach, Calif, and
Camile Cox of Tyler; two great-
grandchildren, Christopher Jacob
Miles of Tyler and Joseph Michael
Cox-Lepore of Newport Beach,
Calif.

Graveside services for Daniel
DeVonte Woodard, a four-month-
old fhild of Alto, was at 10 a.m.
Weciiesday at the New Hope Cem-
etery with the Rev. Herman Mar-
tin officiating. Arrangements were
under the direction of O.T. Allen &
Son Funeral Home.
The child was born Feb. 5 in
Jacksonville and died June 15 in
Rusk.
Survivors are his mother and
father, Norina Woodward of Alto
and Gerald Ligon of Diboll; his
twin brother, David DeUndre
Woodard of Alto, and four other
brothers, Jacob Woodard of Alto,
Robert Woodard of Alto, Kenneth
Ligon of Lufkin and Gerald Ligon
of Diboll; two sisters, Patrena Li-
gon of Lufkin and LaKandra
Woodard of Alto; his grandfather,
Tommy Ray Woodard of Alto; and
numerous aunts, uncles, cousins
and other relatives.
Graveside services for Agnes
Dunsmore Strickland, 83, of
Lufkin, were at 11 a.m. Wednes-
day at Lynches Chapel Cemetery
with the Rev. Steve Shirley offici-
ating. Gipson Funeral Home was
in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Strickland was born Aug.
24,1914, in Alto to the late Albert
Clayton Dunsmore and Oma Bland
Dunsmore. She died Sunday in a
Lufkin nursing home.
Mrs. Strickland was a home-
maker, mother and grandmother.
She was a former Alto resident
and had lived in Lufkin since 1948.
Mrs. Strickland was a member of
the Lufkin Central Baptist
Agnes Dunsmore Strickland
Church.
Mrs. Strickland was preceded in
death by her husband, Hughie
Strickland in 1971; and a grand-
son, James (Mike) Heishman in
1996.
Survivors are her daughter and
son-in-law, Marlene and Truman
Yoder of Lufkin; a son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Albert and Geraldine
Strickland ofLufkin; grandson and
granddaughter-in-law, William
(Bill) and Donna Heishman of
Grand Prairie; four great-grand-
children, Allen Heishman,
Kristina Heishman, Dana Copes
and Rachel Copes; a sister, Mattie
Rogers of Lake Charles, La.; a sis-
ter and brother-in-law, Marie and
Ernest McQueen of Alto; a special
friend, James (Pat) Edwards of
Lufkin; and several nieces, neph-
ews and other relatives.

to include 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the
first Saturday of each month.
Regular hours of the Good
Samaritan are 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
