volleyball camp
The Jacksonville College Athletic
Department will be sponsoring a
volleyball camp at the college from
July 20- 24. The camp will be
conducted by the volleyball coaching
staff at Jacksonville College and be
from 8 a.m. until noon each day. The
emphasis of the camp will be
fundamental development, skill
improvement and team play concepts.
The costs of the camp will be $50 and
the camp will be limited to the first 30
applicants.

signs 8 newcomers
Jacksonville College Basketball
Team recently announced the signing
of eight new players. Signing with the
Jaguars were Clyde Harper of New
Orleans; Allen Brown from Carver High
School in New Orleans; Mike Pulmas
from Grand Bay, Alabama; Chris Drew
transferring from Jacksonville
University of Florida; Curley Clowers
from Macon, Gorgia; James Williams
from Slidel High School in Slidell,
Louisiana; Chris Arledge from Krum
High School and Kenya Robinson from
Cohen High School in New Orleans.

Reunion slated June 27
The Hendrick Family Reunion is
planned to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday,
June 27, at the Campground Baptist
Church, west of Alto. Lunch will be
served at noon and the business
meeting will follow.
■ Alto church slates
Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School is planned
for 6-9 p.m. June 21-26 at the Alto
First Baptist Church. Entitled
Starquest, the sessions are open to all
boys and girls through sixth grade.
Each day is scheduled to have Bible
learning activities, snacks, music and
crafts. The church is located on
Highway 21 East of Alto.

I Waymakers will
participate at Alto
Community Singing
The Alto Community Gospel Singing
will present a night of Southern gospel
music featuring the Waymakers at 7
p.m. Saturday, June 29 at the Alto
Missionary Baptist Church. For
information, interested persons may

The Waymakers include Jack
Havard, Polly Havard, J.T. Carlile, Cliff
Layton, Dwain Forsythe and Reggie
Moore. They have been in existence
since 1959.
The two remaining original members
are Jack Havard and J.T. Carlile, who
were only teenagers when the group
was formed. Jack's wife, Polly, has
been with the group since 1968.
The Rev. Otis Bryan, church pastor,
issues an invitation to the public to
come and join in this special time of
gospel music.
I Jacksonville College
hosts basketball camps
The Jacksonville College Basketball
Program will be sponsoring two
sessions of summer basketball camp
from June 22-26 and July 13-17. Each
session will be from 8 a.m. until noon
and the camp will be for boys and girls
ages 7-17. The emphasis of the camp
will be on fundamental and skill
development along with both individual
land team competitions. The cost of
the camp will be $50 with each camper
receiving a camp T-shirt.

Corrections
Max Schochler, Rusk daylily
grower says he did not hybridize the
Edna Slover Daylily as reported in last
week's edition of the Cherokeean/
Herald.
The Edna Slover Daylily was
hybridized by Bertha Fults of Alto. Mr.
Schochler purchased his plant from
Mrs. Fults and grew the blooms from
that plant.
We apologize to Mr. Schochler and
Mrs>f ults for this mistake.

In last week's edition of the
Cherokeean/Herald a Happy Birthday
ad for Alto Care Center honored
Catherine Murphy, who celebrated her
77th birthday.
Mrs. Murphy was born in Cherokee
County on June 10, 1921. Her
husband, Leon, is also a resident of
Alto Care Center. Son, Mark, resides
in Sugarland.

awarded A&M honor
Eugene Vincent Carrier IV of Wells
has been named to the Texas A&M
Commandant's Honor roll for the 1998
spring semester. The Commandant's
Honor Roll recognizes members of
the corps who earned a 3.0 grade
point ratio while enrolled for at least 12
semester hours.
I Ruskite named to UT
Tyler Dean's List
James Christopher Vaught of Rusk
was among students receiving spring
semester honors at the University of
Texas at Tyler. He was named to the
Dean's List for that period.
