Sandy laid his hand on tho woman's
shoulder ami said kindly:
"Well my lass where smy welcome'"
And she Hushed mid Mulled so liriijlit-
ly that Jessie fmpit sho had thnuiiht
her ugly.
"Vuu'ro welcomo Sandy" sho said
In her broad dialect which uo enturo
to translate for the liemdll of thu south-
ern reader then went on rapidly talk-
ing to him In an mulct lone while .Jes-
sie to whom their dialect was (ireck
took off her dripping hat and shook thu
raimltops on the spotless Hour looking
about her curiously as she did so.
Hex strode to the Hie and called for n
glass of whisky; tho woman hastened
to obey him and Sandy stepped to Jes-
sie's side and bald tespectfully:
"I have ordered tho pontes to ho
stabled miss wti cannot get back to-
night. Jt will be quite dark by tho
tltnu the rain has ceased and I can
promibo jou coml'oi table ijitarters here:
it is rough but it Is clean and hiincst."
Iteforo Jessie could reply he bad left
her to get her a seat and sho anxiously
went to her cousin and said almost en-
treating!': "Itex must we stay hero to-night?
Pray return If ikmsIIiIh to auntie; she
will bo so anxious about us and I
would rather faco any danger than re-
main in tills queer out-of-the-way place
all night."
"Sandy is right dear; it is impossible
that wo can return to-night My pony
has cast a shoe anil it i.s a long journey
to be taken in thu dark. I date say they
can mako us comfortable; at any ratu
wo must bo content to put up with
whatever fortune oilers us here as wo
cannot get away. 1 will ask tho woman
to show yon to your room and lend
you another dress; you aru wet through
and look cold."
Jessie's heart sank strangely as ho
lclt her that strange exultant look btlll
upon ills face.
A moment later the woman who was
called Flora Mackay camn anil tillered
to show her to a beif-chamber; tho wom-
an's manner was strange and slit)
ecetned to shrink almost tearfully from
Jessie.
She led tho weary girl into a bare but
scrupulously clean room tho diamond-
paned window of which looked out on
a lann-ynrd.
In total silence tho woman got a lin-scy-wolscy
skirt of cloudy hluo-grey a
handsome plaid and a splendid brooch
to lix it. Evidently by tho reverent
prido with which sho took these tieas-
urcs from a dark oaken press she prized
them for they mado her gala dress.
Sho helped Jessie to put it on and
smiled to see what a lovely plctnrestmo
ellect It had when adorning tho il.uk
beauty of agltl whoso looks would re-
call tho "Lady of tho Lake." for Jcs-
sio'B proud little head looked well above
tho glowing tints 'of tho Plaid which
tho woman deltly nml with extraord-
inary speed fixed about her in grace-
ful folds.
Flora felt attracted by the sweet
troubled faco nml even unbent so far
as to offer her rough hand to guide her
guest safely down tho dark steep
crooked staircase.
Instead of leading her guest into the
kitchen or bar. whichever it might be
of tho house she opened a heavy door
In an opposite direction and Bhowed
her into a long low room that had a
prim air of comfort about it.
A polished table was set out with
Quaint bluo china and above tho high
mantelpiece was a prize trout in a
glazed case with two brass candlesticks
beside it.
A Jug of homely bipssoms scented the
room with their fragrant breath.
Ilex with Ills face a dusky red and
hlseyos strangely soft for him roso
from tho dentlis of a hearse-like arm-
chair of black leather studded with
brass nails to weloomo the timid fright-
ened flguro of Jessie who with quiver-
" ing lips and startled eyes silently t"ok
the proffered scat and said in a husued
voice:
"Oh I wish the rain would coasol
Terhaps If it did wo might get back."
"Im possible" said Hex brightly; "the
torrent would bo swollen by this down
pour and the roads quito impassable.
You must make tho best of tho adven-

servant vet she looked nfter him now
ns though alio wished for Ids society; ho
s.iw tho look and fell n queer sensation

the reward Is great and the risk noth-
ing." and ho told himself there could be
no real wrong ngalnst her since she hud
her cousin's love so he left the cousins
nlone and went Into the kltohcn where
n more homely but as welcome a repast
awaited him.
Flora was seated by thu table tho
lines of her hard face lighted up by the
firelight; her father slept quietly in Ids
corner with his ilogliesldohlm; nothing
could bo heard but the solemn tick of
ati old case clock nud the Incessant beat
of tho rain
"Sandy come nml tell me all about
it man; the truth mind for I am not a
woman to be duped."
"Von can never accuse me of having
duped you my lass. Let ma eat my
supper and I lien you shall hear all
thero Is to tell; but get rid of that owl-
ejedlad yonder no need for him to
know eveiylhlng."
Tho woman turned her gloomy faco
upon tho boy and dismissed him with a
nod; then she helH'd Sandy freely to
the good things on tho table but ar-
took sparingly herself.
Sho finished long before her compan-
ion and sal with her arms crossed un-
der her apron watching him with a
softened light In her eyes that mado
her look mora womanly and pleasant.
When she hail removed the meal he
drew nearer tho III o lighted a short
wooden pipe and prepared fora gossip.
"Von see lass 'tis liko this. That
voung couple yonder are man and wife
but sho Is a rare vixen though sho does
look so sweet. Well they havo had a
sort of lovers' quatrel at tho outset of
their married life. She was Jealous
about some old sweetheart of his said
he had been unfaithful to his vows
swore they should never bo tlu satno
again to eaelt other declared sho would
lio with him jet from him all tho
days of her life lie poor chap is half
heart-broken lor ho Is fool enough to
be nver-fond and Indulgent of her and
so has let her whim make him wretch-
ed. Had I been in his place I'd soon
havo shown who was master but lie has
dealt in gentleness too long. Why she
has tho brass to call him cousin and
deny his right to her. Site's n little
daft I think or she would never get
into sucli rages. Why at first she took
me In ami I reckon I'm a cute one. Ho
brought her heio because he found out
she had laid n plot to run nwny from
him her lawful master and dlsgrnco
herself with somo worthless fellow.
1 Ier husband so loved her that ho looked
overall that for there had been no actu-
al sin on her side nud so he has run
away with his own wife to keep her
from running away with another man."
"The wicked hussyl Who would
think It to look at her? She seems as
Hueetnnd Innocent ns a babe. Well
what good can come of their stopping
liereV"
"Why don't you see It will keep dis-
graceful scenes from the sight of tho
world. The master has mado up his
mind to tnme her at last."
As Sandy finished speaking ho start-
ed up for Ills master "ailed him from
the own door requesting a fresh sup-
ply of fuel and whisky and tho supper
to bo removed.
ClIAITEIt IV.
When Sandy entered tho room ho
saw Jessie standing looking out of tho
quaint window upon tho mists and
darkness nf the night.
Tears glinted on her long lashes; her
cheeks were white and her Hps drawn.
Sho seemed strangely anxious and un-
happ" flex in tho contrary looked Jolly and
eomfoitnble smoking in the big chair
by tho fire. His handsnmo face was
Hushed his eyes bright with excite-
ment. S mdy took In the fuel nnd the wom-
an allowed with the whisky looking
curiously at the picturesque figure in
the window-seat.
Jcssio's head was turned nway from
them. Sho seemed lost In thought till
her cousin's volco roused her by saying
merrily:
"Cnmo nlong. Sirs. Vennlmore.
Drink a glass nf true mountain dew. It
is bound to cure tho blues."
"Mrs. Vcnnlmorei" What did ho
mean?
Jessie was roused out of her reflec-
tions all her faculties on tho alert.
Always suspicious of him sho at
onco Jumped to the conclusion that ho
was plotting against her lieaee.
Sho shook back her curls with her old
proud gesture nnd went to the table
ami stood full In the feeble light of tho
old-fashioned oil lamp that hung from
the celling.
Her cheeks were Hushed and her eyes
Hashed ominously ns sho asked:
"Did you call me Jlrs. VenntmoreY"
"I did my beauty."
"How daro you! You know I shall
never hold that title."
"Jionsensol What stupid talkl Why
will you light against fate? llrlng my
wife a glass of wine If you havo It."
Flora Mackay looked from ono to the
other curiously.
Sho could see the battlo had begun
nnd wondered vaguely how Jes3le could
hopo to stand out against her handsome
young husband.
She was going to fetch a bottle of
home-made wine when Jessie's volco
commanded her to remain where she
was.
Jesslo had grown white as death; her
great pathetic eyes blazed out like twin
stars in a stormy sky
"1'leaBe remain where you are. I ap-
peal to you as n woman to help mo and
save me from that man's plots. I can
fathom his scheme. He hopes by his
bravado to establish a claim upon me.
Wo nro In Scotland nud ho knows how
little hero can constitute a marriage
but even hero both parties must bo con-
senting or there is no legal tie and I
earnestly entreat you to take heed of
what 1 say for I swear before God I nra
not his wifo but his cousin. Lot mo
go with you. 1 am but a weak woman
and I fear to remain nlone with him
now I know how cruelly he Intends to
use my woman's weakness against my-
self." Hex laid bis hand on Jcssio's arm as
she wits about tu cross to Flora's side;
bitter contempt curled her lip as Jes-
sie Hashed round on him fiercely and
said under her breath:
"You coward! you shall answer for
this outrage"
Then sho turned to Sandy Imploring-
ly and said:
"Sandy you know what your master
says Is untrue; surely you uiu not
leagued ngalnst me Tblnk of two
men lighting against one weak woman!
In pity say you will befriend me and
save me from this roan's wicked pow-
er." "Tho law gives him the power Mrs.
Vennlmore; no one can couio between
von nud his love for love It Is and not
hate as you would have us believe.
Were I In his place I should show you
little pity; he has been too patient with
you. If you ask my opinion I should
tell you my sympathies nro with the
man you make miserable by your cruel
caprices not with you who forget the
duties of wifehood and denyyour obed-
ience where it is due."
Sandy delivered this speech with the
gravity of an orator. Flora looked re-
lieved. Jessie fairly gasped; she saw
her cousin's cruel power closing in upon
her life and crushing out all hope of
happiness. A despairing thought of
lioli came to her and moved tier to
one more effort for freedom.

Sandy shook his head flrmly. " Vour

started for luilou ttwliiv."
"Oh. my tindl It is Impossible; she
dared not desert me-f.hu who Is my
only refuge against her son. She prom-
ised to protect me and persuaded mo

"I nm not Ids wife. I would rather lay
In my grave than in his arms."
"Tell mo jour rightful name lady."
"(tod help me It is Jessie Vennl-
more but ho is my cousin not my hus-
band though his name Is tho same as
mine."
Flora shook her head nnd retreated
to tho door saying ns sho laid her hand
on tho latch "I cannot Interfere be-
tween man and wife mi long as lie does
you no iMHllly Injury."
Seeing that she was about to leave
them nlone together Jesslo wrenched
her hand free and sprang towards her
clinging to her dress as sho said "For
Heaven's sake do not leave mo aiono
with that man. As you arc a woman I
implore you in common charity to our
sex to stay with mo. Oh. do you not
know there can bo worse injuries than
tlioso which bruise the llesh. lie would
strike nt my honor my happiness my
more than life my betrothed husband s
faith In my purity. Oh do not look so
hard I will beg you on my knees to
help mo and stand between mo and n
danger I dread more than death. Oh
you will you must relent. I never
knelt to mortal lieforc and I kneel to
you for you hold more than my life in
your hands you hold my honor."
Flora had turned nud rested her hand
kindly on tho head bowed on her arm.
She was about to speak when she felt
Sandy's hand heavily laid upon her
shoulder and heard him say sternly:
"Will j-ou take this wotn..ti's word
against mine Flora and you havo
known me all your life? 'Tis but stage
play; come nway your woman's heart
Is too weak for the task of taming a re-
bellious spirit."

She leant back ngalnst tho wall pant-

people away and turning the ru-ty key
In tho rickety lock said pallentlv for
him for her fear of him touched while
u nurt nun:
"Jessie vou need not fear me. I Invn

terly despisu me. 1 hate ptaetleed this

so will respect j un till jou nte mine by
the laws of the l.iud and the chinch. I
Intend to keep jou bete till your spirit
Is broken nnd j-ou nre glad to come to
me for shelter from tho disgrace this
stay with me will put nixm you in the
sight of the world. When we go out
no longer disown mo ns a husband but
win neg me to mtiKo tne contract limn-
ing for ever to save your fair name. I
love you and swore to win you by fair
means or foul: fair means failed now
we shall see what will come of my last
desperate venture."
"Defeat for you. nnd death for me
perhaps" said Jessie despairingly. Sho
knew how vain it was to appeal to this
man further.
Ho looked nt her regretfully as sho
leant wearily against the wall her faco
white and down-dropped like an early
snowdrop.
Hex felt remorseful and said:
"Oh my darling how I wish you
would give In to me nnd let me teach
you to care for mo as I do for you. I
believe I could mako j'ou happy if you
would let me."
Jessie looked up scornfully.
"If you cared for my happiness j-ou
would not have set tills trap for me
and before It is too into you would re-
lease me nnd right mo with those peo-
ple." "What can their opinion matter to
youV"
"Much; the esteem of tho most hum-
ble of God's creatures Is not to bo light-
ly lost. Are we to stand here nil night
longy May I not bo permitted to go to
another room?"
"Of course you may. You see that
narrow door by the fire-place that leads
into n little bed-chamber: you can rest
securely there I promise to respect
your privacy. I shall remain hero just
to keep up the appearanco of being your
husband."
He lighted a cigar as he spoke and
looked intently at Jessie who was lost
In thought trying to see a loop-hole of
escape.
She longed to be alone free from her
cousin's exultant look.
Sho moved slowly towards the door
which lie opened and she saw a long
low room with n rough boarded Hoor
to keep It above the cold stone: a nar-
row window high up In the wall look-
ed out upon n dreary scene of driving
clouds and wind-tossed rain-drops.
A cosy white bed stood In the centre
of the room nnd she saw nt a glance
that there was no second door.
She turned on the' threshold nud
faced her cousin proudly.
"I will Walt here because I wish to
