"Then pcrhup I'll lie able to take don 11

This Idea pleased the drowny giant lm-
nienoly. Ho was alxuit to expatlatn upon
It when a heavy rain-drop falling on Id
hand brought him back from tho clouds.
"Lawd lovo the Lull" ho exclaimed "how
wo bo n-lolterlng. Here Jump iii. youiu:
master wo'111 got okiI tweliemlle afore
us)et and a black night irawmlslng to
come."
1 took tho hand which he extended to mo
and which lookiil like a giant's paw and
sprung up to my Beat liestde him.
"Hurry up Martha" he said "get on old
garl" and the m.uo's slow walk broke Into a
trot which caused tho w.igou to rattlo mid
shake 11ml my lei Hi to clatter lu my head.
The prospect ftlll continued bleak but It
was now not ipiHe so desolate. To tho right
and left of ushtlll stietchcd the bleak moor-
land but nnw It was broken up by green hil-
locks and belts of woodland. Hero and there
on the meadows were cattle grazing while at
Intervals were .whitewashed cottages with
llttlo gardens tunning down to the roadside.
From time to time wc louudisl somo quiet
bay and caught it glimpse of tho t-t'.i. l'rcs-
enlly far ahead of us. 1 saw clustering
house from tho midst of which aroso a
church spire.
"What Is that!" I nskeil.
He seemed to know hy Instinct what I
meant fur ho replied without taking Ids e) 1.1
olf tho horse.
"That young master bo Cralgruddoek.
We'll stiwp there Tor a bit or sumiuat to eat
and drink and to glo the m iron rest."
When wo enleieil the village of Cralgrnd-
dix'kour nppcuinnce caused no llttlo ktlr.
John liudd was evidently well known for
as tlie lumbering wagon went rattling down
the llllle street shock-headed children cimo
peeplngoutof thodiMirw.ijs and hero and
theio n icas.tut woman made her apcaraucc
and noddeil clieerlully to'iisaswo went by
for each ami nil John Kudd had a good-lm-inored
grin which I thought 'broadened a
little as the wagon was pulled up with a Jerk
before the door of tho Inn. Here nfter some
llttlo trouble wo got something to eatn few
boiled eggs and some home-hiked bread.
When the horse had been tested w-u stalled
again on our Joutney.
Tho warm day was succeeded hy n cold
evening and with tho darkness had como
rain. I was glad to follow John Itudd's ex-
ample to wrap myself well up In my over-
coat before 1 again took my sent behind the
mare. We Jolted on again covering what
seemed to luu an intcrmlnablo space. The
darkness rapidly Increased the rain contin-
ued to fall and.iworn out with fatigue 1 fell
Into a lltrtil due.
I was dimly conscious of the wagon rolling
ou of John Hudil making occasional dis-
jointed remaiks rhythmical 111 character to
which lie evidently exiiected no reply and
of certain stoppages when John mysterious-
ly disappeared and returned refieshed and
strengthened for his work.
At length however John Iiudd's voice
aroused me indeed.
"Wawk up young master" said he;"wo'm
gottln' pratty nigh your place."
I roused myself and looked alKiut me but
there was nothing to tie seen. Darkness en-
compassed us on every hand; tho wind was
sighing softly making a mhuuI like the dis-
tant murmur of the sea. Piesonlly the wag-
on stopped. Tho carrier Jumped down and
watted for me to do the same; then he gave
a peculiar whistle as he went round to tho
back of the wagon to haul out my trunk.
The whistle had Its effect The darkness
was suddenly penetrated by alight which'
seemed quite close tons ami a man a voice
called out In n broad country dialect:
"lie that you John Itudd?"
"las mate" returned ltudd "You catch
hold 0' the young gentleman. I ha' gawt tho
bawx."
"lie this tho lad?" asked the voice as I
felt a heavy hand laid upon my shoulder
"las."
"Waal my lad you bo welcomo to BL (lur-
lott'sl" The band kept hold of my shoulder and
led mo along. The next thing I became
conscious of was standing upon tho thresh-
old of nn open door and of tho voice of my
guide saying heartily:
"Yar bo he Martha I"
Then another voice that of 11 woman an-
swered; "Lawd lev e tho lad ; let's look at fuu t" and
then there was silence
I found myself standing In tho middle of
quaint Cornish kitchen gating upon my
liowly-fouud friends The Individual who
had led me into tho kitchen and who turned
out to be my uncle was a tall broadly-bull'
man dressed In a rcd-stalned suit of coarse
flannel said suit consisting merely of a shirt
and a pair of trouwra. Ills hands were big
and broad and very red his bead was thickly
covered with coarse black hair and he spoke
th. broadest of Cornish dialect In a voice of
thunder. Having finished my Inspection ol
number onel glanced at numbertwo name-
ly my aunt rihe was a comely looking wo-
re an of forty very stout and motherly In ap-
pearance alio wore a cotton dress a large
coarse apron and a curious cap not unlike
the colft so popular In Urlttany
My amazement at the sight of these two
Individuals was so strong that 1 could scarce-
ly fore mr lltxs to atter a word! but If mv
sut prise was great theirs seemed greater.
After tho Hist glanco at me they looked un-
easily at one another tho genial smile faded
from their faces and tho words of welcome
died upon their lips.
A pleasant Interruption to all this was
John ltudd who at this moment came In
with my trunk upon his shoulder and placed
it down on the kitchen floor then wiped Ids
brow'and opened his overcoat
"It'smartAl bad weather you'm brought
alang wl' ye Mr. ltudd" aald my aunt;
'yar ha' summat to keep otT the rain."
She handed him a glass of ale which he
drank.
"Thank )i missus" said he drawing the
back of his hand across tils month. Then lie
made a dive Into the voluminous folds of his
coat and produced a packet
"That bo for yon missus" said lie; "a llt-
tlo present wl John Kudd's respects; tea
and sugar w I' a suitable Inscription o' my
awn making."
"Thank jou .Mr. Kudd" returned my
aunt taking the packet "You'm vary kind."
"Itead tho warac missus; jead tha
Tfarseal" said Mr. atudd whereupon she pro
c reded to do so.
It was a proud moment for John ltudd; ha
sectoed to expand with pleasure. And
though to all Intents and purposes lie was
gazing uiin Mrs. IVudragoti he rolled ono
eye round my way as if to watch tho effect
tttionme. When the reading was done he
smiled alTably w bile my uncle brought down
his open hand heavily upon his kneo.
"Waal done John wal donol" erleil my
uncle heartily; while another voice ono
which I then heard for the first time aald;
"Oh Mr. Itudd what Imautiful poetry you
do write I"
At the sound of the voice all eyes mine
amongst tho rest were turned upon the speak-
er whom 1 discovered U be a little girl some-
what about my own age or pcrhais a trill
younger so pretty and so quaintly dressed
she looked like a llttlo Dresden china shep-
herdess. "Wha Annie I" said my aunt
"1 declare I'd forgot all about 'eel" my
uncle added. "Come yar my Ixss and lay
bow do ) e do to cr cousin 1"
At this the llttlo glrlcamo forward and
gating earnestly at me tllnldly offered mo
lier hand. .
Suddenly John ltudd who had been fum-
bling about his coat again produced another
packet which he this time handed to my
cousin. Sho iqienetl It and found It contain-
ed a brightly colored shawl and a sheet of
foolscap on which Home lines were penned.
Knowing Mr Itudd'a weakness Aiuiio pro-
ceeded to read the lines!
"To Annlo Pcndragiin who charms all behold-
John Itnil l. of St. Ourlntt's semis this for her
Bliotildcrsi
That tlio'll always bo bnppy In stinthlne an
lluilil."
Having reuit the verses Annlo rell'to volu-
bly admiring them mid tho shawl; but Mr.
Kudd feeling the praise too much for him
glecmily took his desiiturc He paused at
tho door however In glveino a last look
and to express a wish that we should become
better acquainted.
The moment ho was gone attention was
again concentrated upon me. My aunt took
a good look nt me tr; lug tu tlnd traccsof my
mother and father hi my face. My uncle dis-
covered I was both wet and cold; while An-
nie said;
"Why don't you glvc.lilm hlssuppermoth-
cr; I'm sine lm must bo hungry after that
long ride wi' Mr. ltudd."
Annie's suggestion was adopted and we
all sat down to supper. While I ate I had
leisure to look about me. The kitchen was
large and homely In the extreme with a
clean stone-paved floor beneath and great
black rafters above from which hung flitches
of bacon bundles of tallow candles and
divers articles of attire. Tho Ingle was great
ami broad with seats within It formed of
polished black oak and tho lire burned on
the open hearth. In one corner was a recess
with curtains containing a bed which I aft-
erward discovered was to be mine for tile
night
Very little was said or dono that evening.
If I was astonished at tho Bight of my rela-
tives they were equally so at the sight of
me A sort of constraint came iion us alt
I was not sorry to tind that they were very
early people and that at ten o'clock they ro-
tircd and left 1110 to make myself as com-
fortable as I could In tho nress bed In tho
"kitchen. My head was aching partly from
latiguo and partly from excitement and no
sooner did 1 lay It upon the pillow than I
fell Into a sound sleep.
CHAWEll T.
ANNIE.
1 was awakened noxt moning by the sound
of voices lu the dumber mid looking forth
from my sleeping-place 1 saw my uncle
seated In bis stilned flannel clothes devour-
ing a substantial breakfast of tea and hoiue-
baked cakes of my aunt's making waited on
by little Annie who seen In the bright morn-
ing light looked even cleaner and neater
than she had looked the night before
"l.awd love'ee little woman" my undo
was saying "who put that sart o' nawnsense
Into your head I 1 warrant Tawm Venrud-
dock or some other gomerlL ha' been up
here clacking to-mother. Dawn't go dawn
the mine naw more? Why the mine's bread
and butter vlttles and drink to you and
me!"
"Tom 1'enruddock says 'taint afefather"
returned Annie. "And Tom ought to know
for he's worked there ever since he waa
born."
"Ho knaws no more than this chunk 0'
bread little woman. He's the Idlest chap o
the gang. Tawm Is. There dawn't you
worrit The Lawd's under the earth as well
as above it and '11 take care of father never
fearl"
Unseen In my corner I slipped on my
clothes; but by the time I had done so my
uncle had left the cottage. Annie was still
there and she took me to a little bedroom up-
stairs where 1 washed and brushed my hair.
Descending again to the quaint old kitchen
I found my aunt. Just come In from feeding
the poultry. She gave a kindly nod; then
sitting down at the table drew me gently to
her and pushing the hair off my forehead
looked thoughtfully luto my face.
"Let me look at 'ee by daylight lad I Ay
I was right you be as like your poor father
as one pea Is like another. Law d forbid you
should e'er bo half as clever 1"
"Why not motherT" asked Annie who
was looking on with a smile
"llocause he were too clever to sattle down.
He rambled up and dawn like a moor pony
till the Lawd took 'un and ne'er make him-
self a home; and when he died there was
nouo of his kith and kin near him to close
his eyes. Thar lad 4t dawn and take your
breakfast We'll try to make a mail of 'ee
for my poor sister's sake."
This sudden allusion to my dead parents
coupled with tho strangeness of my sur-
roundings brought before me more forcibly
than ever tho utter forlornncss of my posi-
tion and sent the tears starting to my eyes.
I fancy Annie noticed this for sho quickly
changed tbe subject asked her mother for
some more hot sebnes and putachalrforme
at the table.
This diversion gave me ample time to re-
cover myself. Feeling heartily ashamed of
my exhibition of weakness I swallowed tha
lump In my throat dashed the back of my
band across my eyes and determined from
that hour forth to remember that tears did
not become "a man."
The breakfast was appetlilng perhaps
from the very strangeness ct It Never be-
fore In my life bad 1 had placed before me
at eight o'clock In the morning a meal of
hot scones boiled potatoes and milk; yet 1
mightily pleased my aunt by disposing of
enough to keep me going for tbe rest of the
day.
"Ah Mad" she exclaimed as her bright
eye kindled with plea-sure "you's gawt tome
Cornish blood In 'ee after all and can eat
your vlttles with a relish. You'm got no
proud stomach my lad and will be a man
like your uncle before lawng."

OPINION OF AN EXPERT.
Mrs. Mary B. Wcleh Taaeharot Domaatle
Eeonomy at StaU TJnUanlty of Iowa
"My deliberate Judgment Is that the oTen
of tho Ilange as compared vlth others
Is not only mora equally lpaiod la erery
part front na vrell as rearbut as a result
of Its superior ventilation tho food placed
therein Is better cooked wbll retaining a
sweeter flavor and a larger proportion of
lta best Juices. X havo found; also that the
consumption of fuel In this Ilange for ft gtrtn
amount of work. Is much lcss;than any other.
