The Limn commissioner met the vet-
eran republican Jacob Ooll yesterday.
Jacob was mad Ju"t then and kicked
with all the force of his teutonic nature.
He had been Imposed upon and a llrlt-
Isher had got away with him. Ho
wanted to Hod that llrltlsher and to In-
terview him a la Sullivan and Ityan
style. For a few mluutes Jacob strikes
about fOO pounds at a lick and thinks
that he could get sufficient satisfaction
In that Interview. His story briefly
was as follows: The slick Englishman
called at his farm and under the pre-
tenoe that he was searching for horses
got supper and a bed. In his bed-room

ued at $10 which be had presented to
bis daughter. When the Englishman
left tbe umberella left loo and although .
he has heard of both traveling compla-
cently together he has not been able to
catoh up with them. If he does that
Englishman will look pretty sick after

has been caused by the discovery of gold
In Dry Frio canyon about 30 miles from
tbe Sunset railroad.
A nugget weighing four and one-half
ounces was picked up by one of the set-
tlers on his own land nnd parties are
now out scouring the canyon and
scarcely a day passes without some per-
son bringing In proof that gold does ex
ist in mat region.

Charged With Swindling?.
City Marshal Shardeln yesterday af-
ternoon arrested a sheepman of Ken-
dall county named I. Brandensteln on
a warrant Issued by Justice Anton Adam
served out by Messrs. Croll & Uausen
commission buyers charging him with
swindling. Tbe basis of the charge Is
that llrandensteln sold bis clip of wool
to this tirm at 20 cents per pound repre-
senting It free from burn tags etc. but
wben alterward examlned.Just the con-
trary was found to be the case. The firm
then demanded the usual discount from
Brandensteln who refused to return any
part of tbe money claiming the wool
was free from all dirt when sold to thetn.
He gave bond to answer to the charge.
"Kevenire Is Sweet."
A young fellow of this city who teok
two well known and popular young la-
dles to tbe theatre last winter and was
given "the shake" after the theatre for
other escorts borne paid the girls back
In their own coin Thursday night by
taking them to tbe dance at the springs
and leaving them without any escort to
return home at 1 o'clock In the morning.
It was rather cruel of blm but no doubt
they learned their lesson well.

It was Intended yesterday to have had
a publlo trial of tbe "Sam Houston and
James II. Frenoh" Are engines In order
that their relative-force might be defi-
nitely ascertained but owing to the
death of Engineer Meyer of Fire oom-
pany No. 1 tbe trial has been post-
