PICROTOXIN.
A principle obtained from the seeds of Anamirta pa-
nicldata. It is said to be found also in the fruit of Ana-
mzirta cocculus. Its chemical constitution is given as
C12H1607Aq.
Physical Properties.-This drug occurs in brilliant
colorless needles.
Solubility.-This principle is soluble in alcohol, and
somewhat so in water and in ether.
Therapeutic Applications.-Picrotoxin has been pre-
scribed in hysteria, epilepsy, spinal paralysis, and in
chorea, in all of which affections it is said to have pro-
duced good results. It has also been recommended in
the treatment of the night-sweats of phthisis. As a local
remedy it has been employed with asserted success in
parasitic diseases of the skin.
Administration.-The dose of picrotoxin is put down
as from TI-9 to 1 0 of a grain (o.ooo65 to 0.0065 gramme).
Locally, an ointment of the strength of from 3 to 5 in 250
parts may be employed.
PILIGANINE.
An active principle extracted fiom Lycopodium sauru-
rus, a plant belonging to the Lycopodiacce, and known
by the vulgar name of Pilzgan. It is said to be contained
also in the species Lycopodium selago.
Physical Properties.-Pleiganine occurs as a yellow-
ish transparent mass with a repugnant odor. With the
acids it forms salts of which the one best known is the
hydroc/lorate.
Solubility.-This drug is soluble in water and chloro-
form, and partly soluble in ether.
Therapeutic Applications.-HyIdrocklorate of pilga-
nine possesses emetic and cathartic virtues, but it has
chiefly been employed, though not extensively, against
tenia and as an antispasmodic in the treatment of
asthma.
