children it can be administered in some kind of fruit-
jelly, in corresponding doses.
MECONARCEINE.
The chemical nature of this drug has not been def-
initely determined; it is said to be a derivative of nar-
ceine contained in opium.
Physical Properties.-This substance appears in
lemon-yellow crystals having a melting-point of 358.8
F. (1260 C.) accompanied with some decomposition.
Solubility.-A iconarceine is soluble in 50 per cent.
alcohol, and to some extent in boiling water.
Therapeutic Applications.-This remedy has been
lauded, given internally, in bronchial affections, neur-
algias, and insomnia. It has been somewhat effective
in the treatment of the opium-habit.
Administration.-The dose of mcconarceine may be
set down as from s to grain (o.oi to o.o3 gramme).
MENTHOL.
Obtained from the oil of peppermint-camphor and the
essential oils of other plants. Menthol is represented
chemically by the formula C10H200.
Physical Properties.-This drug is made up of color-
less acicular crystals, of a prismatic form, having an
odor resembling that of peppermint. It melts at Io7.60
F. (420 C.) and boils at 413.6 F. (212 C.).
Solubility.-M ntio/l is soluble in ether and the fixed
oils, and slightly soluble in water.
Therapeutic Applications.-This remedy is a stim-
ulant, sedative, and anaesthetic. It is serviceable as a
stomachic and carminative, and has been used with suc-
cess in colicky pains and the vomiting of pregnancy.
Influenza and pulmonary tuberculosis have received
benefit from its action. Locally applied, the drug is
recommended in migraine and neuralgias.'

which seem to have produced good results in the local treatment of tooth-
ache, migraine, neuralgias, etc.
