THE GALLEON
SONNET
Foam fretted waves upon the restless deep
Of some unplumbed eternal sea we drift,
Vague and uncertain shapes that rise and shift,
And with a ceaseless murmur, shoreward creep.
How can we know how far may be the shore
On whose wide sands our beings shall expire?
Or what unfathomed.purpose, what desire
Thus stirs us, guides our courses evermore?
Are we not of the substance of the sea?
Why do we move? Her inner depths are still:
She of herself is lifeless, as are we
Cold lifless parts, inanimate until
That deathless being wakes us from our sleep,
The wind-cloaked Spirit, Ruler of the deep.
