THE GALLEON
HEAVEN
I think that Heaven's not one endless day
Of idle sweet existence, sunny hours,
And careless songs-a languid harmony
Of wind-borne music in Elysian bowers.
I hope to have some business with the stars,
Some dangerous mission where the comets ride,
Mayhap some soldiering in celestial wars-
Som airy post as sentinel or guide.
I do not think that fadeless roses bloom
In those bright fields-may they not shadeless be!
Give me sg9me taste of winter's poignant gloom,
Or autumn's gaudy glow occasionally,
Lest, in a spring too long and sweet, I pine
For some eternal dreamless anodyne.
