THE GALLEON
EDITORIAL
The launching of the Galleon is a momentous event in the an-
nals of McMurry. The little bark, with sails hoisted and banners
flying, waits, eager and impatient for the final shove that will send
her forth upon the heaving seas of journalism to wrestle with the
waves and whirlwinds of this her first voyage. What disasters in
the way of criticism may await her, the pilots dare not guess.
There may be whirlpools and typhoons, cold currents from Labra.
dor and hot and scorching breezes from the tropics. Our prayer
is, that the elements may have mercy on the fledgling sea hawk
until she has had time to accustom herself to the adverse blasts
and the unruly billows, and has learned to navigate with some de-
gree of ease and assurance the trackless and unchartered deep.
We might compare ourselves to the crew of the Santa Maria,
braving sea serpents, dragons, and "the jumping off place," in a
search for new worlds. We might compare ourselves to that fab-
led group of worthies who manned the Argos of Jason in quest of
the Golden Fleece; or better still, to the followers of the interpid
Odysseus, since one of our number has already been left on the isle
of the Sirens. But at any rate, we are embarking into new seas,
flying the colors of our school and seeking to win for her new hon-
ors.
There are innumerable platitudes to the effect ,that a brave
attempt is worthy of some approval, and in this truism we take
refuge, trusting that the future will mark out new paths of pro-
gress and improvement.
We offer to our readers and subscribers the Cargo of the
Galleon, in the hope that it will meet with their approval, when we
remind them that it is the burden of our first voyage.5
