THE GALLEON
found the treasure."
". oWf'd you know about it,"
a klcd Tabby in surprise.
"Oh, Bub told me that he
found some di ecticns, and that
Pinkey had gone to look for it.
I wonder if he found it. Look, he
has a box in his hand."
Tubby tried to appear disin-
tzrested but he had seen the tin
box with mingled curiosity and
alarm. He would like to have
told Celia that it was all a fake
and not to pay any attention to
Pinkey, but this he dared not
do. Instead he shrugged his
shoulders and snorted skepti-
cally.
"Bah, there's nothing to it.
Pinkey's probably just trying'
to fool us with his old treasure
stuff."
Pinkey was now within hail-
ing distance, and it could be
seen that his face wore a grand
triumphant smile, in fact the
smile was a little too grand, it
was overdone, but it served its
purpose. Tubby was completely
baffled, this was hardly the
kind of a return he had expected
to see. He appeared to be to-
tally oblivious to his surround-
ings. Celia had expected him
to speak at least. When he fail-
ed to pay her the slightest at-
tention she took the matter into
her own capable hands.
"H' lo, Pinkey," she called
out, "watcha got there? Did
you really find the treasure ?"
Pinkey was well nigh thrown
into consternation by this cor-
dial show of interest. Never-
theless he held his ground. He
turned with an expression of
of surprise, as if he had just be-
come aware of his existence.
"Did I?" he said, with feign-
ed excitement in his voice, "Did
I? well can you see this ?" and
he dropped his pick and shovel
to thump on the tin box whic'tresounded eloquently. Then
he picked up the tools and
started off, as if the matter
were ended so far as he was
concerned. But Clia did not
consider it ended. She arose,
brushed off her dress and fol-
lowed after him, leaving the en-
raged Tubby to gnash his teeth
alone.
"Oh, Dinkey, wait a minute,
won't you ?"
Pinkey saw her coming and
stopped. A sudden surge of joy
swept through him at the sight
of this appiration of loveliness
who was actually leaving the
party to talk with him. But his
joy was short lived. She
thought he was rich,, that was
it, no wonder she was following
him. Tubby must not have told
her the secret after all. He was
filled with disappointment and
disgust upon taking cogznizance
of the situation. What should
he tell her? Would it be best
to carry the hoax any further?
How she would laueh at him
when he admitted that he had
been fooled. Celia had caught
up with him now and was walk-
ing quietly by his side.
"Did you really find some-
thing, Pinkey ?" she asked soft-
ly.
"Why I-Ah, Didn't I tell
you-" he stammered awkardly.
Then anger and disgust filled
his soul. He felt sick and defeat-
ed; resentment burned hotly in
him.
"No, doggone it, it was all a
dirty scheme to keep me away
from that party-a dirty trick.
I guess you think I'm a fool, but
just wait, I know who done it.
"I know all about it," inter-
rupted Celia. "Bub told me at
the party."
"What did you come out here
for, then?"
"Why, why, to tell you I think23
