Chamuscado-Rodriguez Expedition
to the land of peace," requested him not to leave because of the
scandal his departure would occasion among the natives of that
province, and the consequent danger to the explorers who were in
his company. (Furthermore, he argued) that it was unwise to
travel alone since he was unfamiliar with the land, and since he
was so far from the land of peace, for this Province of San Felipe
is about five hundred leagues from the City of Mexico, and also,
that he (Chamuscado) would return soon to announce the dis-
coveries which he had come to make as leader and justice.
After listening to the above the father said that he had to return
to Mexico City and no one should stop him. Then he took his
departure. The conquerors, colonizers, and discoverers were quite
disturbed and angered because they considered his departure ill-
advised. (Chamuscado) assembled all of the discoverers and
asked them if they did not regard him as their leader and justice,
and if they were aware that he had been commissioned by the
viceroy to discover new lands and render a report to him. They
all answered that they regarded him as their leader, and that they
had so regarded him throughout the expedition and up to the
present time; and that if they had been accustomed to obey him it
was because of the commission which he held from the viceroy;
and that up to the present time they had obeyed him and would
continue to do so in the future in whatsoever he might commarai
of them as loyal vassals and discoverers of His Majesty. For
that purpose they were prepared with their arms and horses, fur-
nished at their own cost, to continue in his service even as they had
up to the present in exploring and discovering whatever else, there
might be in that land, concerning which they had received reports,
so that they might report those things to His Honor (the Viceroy),
in order that His Majesty might reward them for their labours as
well as for their discoveries. This they said and gave as their
answer, and they signed it with their names: Felipe de Escalante,
Pedro Sanchez de Chavez, Pedro Bustamante, Pedro Sanchez de
Fuensalida, Hernando Barrado, and Francisco Sanchez Chamus-
cado. Before me Hernan Gallegos.'The lands settled by the Spaniards.
