I, Hernan Gallegos, appointed scribe for the Province of San
Felipe by the illustrious gentleman, Francisco Sanchez Chamus-
cado, justice, leader, and discoverer for His Majesty of the said
province and Plains of the Cows,7 swear and give true testimony
to all persons who shall see these presents that today, the thirteenth
day of the month of February, 1582, the said justice and leader,
having decided to depart from the land which had been discovered
to make a report concerning it to His Majesty and to His Ex-
cellency, the Viceroy of New Spain, by whose commission the
expedition had been undertaken and the discoveries made, in order

learned that the guardian, Father Francisco L6pez, and Father
Agustin Rodriguez, friars of the Order Minor whom he had brought
with him to preach the Holy Gospel, desired to remain in that
land without there being occasion for it. Since he and the soldier-
discoverers were determined to leave that land to render an account

friars) should accompany them, for, having no interpreter, they

friars replied that they did not wish to leave without preaching

leader, and justice summoned the friars before him and requested
them not to remain in that land because they could do nothing
without an interpreter, and (he said) that they should recall that
one of their number, Father Juan de Santa Maria, their subordi-
nate, had been killed, and they would be killed in like manner if
they did not depart with His Honor (Chamuscado) and the other
discoverers. (He also said) that they should understand that in
remaining in that manner they purposed to experiment with God,
Our Lord, that they would cause great disorder in that land, and
that they should leave with him and the soldiers for they could
return later to evangelize and settle that land. The religious
(men) replied that they would not depart for they had been sent
to preach the Holy Gospel and even though His Honor and the
others did not desire it they would remain and should not be
opposed on pain of excommunication. After that the captain'The Buffalo Plains.
