THE OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE
CITV OF SAN ANGELO
SAN ANGELO TEX. FEB. II IU04
Did you p:iy Unit poll tax? If
so eoino lot's whoop up the schools.
The f.vcH of nil. Texua are on
Sun Ani'Io. Lot's miike our oity
moro attractive.
Tlio City (Jounoil in doing good
work for Sun Angnlo'n future.
Vou don't sec the results now
Ijouauso the worhl wasn't made
in u (lav.
Now lot'H have bettor lire light-
ing facilities. The Council has
rccuivud several estimates on ap-
paratus and tlioy uro working
with a view to furnishing thi'Ho
tilings. Stand up for Vim!
We can't afford to drop that
Fodoral Huilding matter. Wo'ro
in for making a city of Sun Align-
lo and it'n ono of the first essen-
tials. And then we cun get it.
That's another way to look at it.
Lot's go after the substantial
things of civic life. Fairs and
onturtaiumuutH are good hut of
short duration. Why not keep
that Federal building idea in view
and sweeten it up with thoughts
of Free Delivery and a better Fire
Department?
Freighters are coming horo more
now than for years heretofore.
San Angolo is drawing wholoBalo
trado from the very vicinity of
other so-eal led distributing points.
This indicates San Angelo's in-
creased prestige. Lot's do noth-
ing to injure our town in tliu opin-
ion of outsiders. When we do
wo loso prestigo and trado.
A Probable Cundiuutc.
It is highly probable that D. M.
West of Oona proprietor of the
Southwest Texan will enter the
raco for representative of this dis-
trict. Kennies being the pub-
lisher of one of the most brilliant-
ly successful of country news
journals Mr. West is u very suc-
cessful minister ilis friends in
Runnels Schleicher Irion Tom
Green Coke and Menard coun-
ties are very numerous and aro
urging him to become a candi-
date lie has given no tin til
answer to their inquiries and will
probably not do so for several
days yet. lie has promised to
let them know his attitude as
soon as lie can reach a conclusion.
That Mr. West would make a
good legislator the Press has no
reason to doubt. He is an earn-
est. Christian gentleman a
speaker of muiio renown and is
well qualified to represent this
district in the lower house of
Texas' legislative body. lie re-
presents the Western civilization
with its freedom and love of fair
play as thoroughly as any man.
J Io is a prohibitionist to the ex-
tent of local control lie thinks
each county ought to tnko care of
her "booo" question. If there is
to bo u race for thisotlico 1). M.
AVest is a man who will make it
interesting. Ilo Iiub very decided
convictions and honestly en-
deavors to live up to thorn. JIo
is no "crank" but a olear-hoadod
good-natured gontlomanly gontlo-
iuiui who believes ho can sorvo
hiB constituency in an honest and
capable manner at Austin.
Says a Whole Lot.
ThoSau Angolo Press is ono of
tlio host weekly papors in the
Stato and its nmuugors dosorvo
much crodit. Concho Ilorald
Paint Hook.
Reudors do wo dosorvo thoso
compliment? Thero aro nearly
five hundred of you who aro now
subscribers since September. Do
you ngroo with tho Ilorald? If
thoro'B anything in trying Tho
Press ought to bo what tho Her-
ald says it is. Its publisher bo-
liovos no paper on earth ovor triod
haulor to win its way on nothing
but its morits and fools that thoro
is ample assurance of succoss.

As Others Sec Us.
There nro many people who will
argue that it isn't worth while to
worry about what others think of
us Hut humanity is frail and
folks who ontertnin theso theories
are likoly to bo ut error.
Others boo good oftentimes in
us that we oursolvos aro not cog-
nizant of. There are men in San
Angolo who givo moro away
monthly out of pure charity than
they spend on their families
You may not know where to put
your liundB on these men but thoy
exist nevertheless. Thero uro
inon in Angolo who spend much
of their time and that gratuitous-
ly thinking of the betterment of
San Angolo. Some of these men
do so from a mercenary stand-
point. Vot thero are thoHe who
do not
On the other hand wo seo every
day faults in individuals which
they do not see. Oftentimes we
magnify those faults. Some of
us do the opposite we excuse
them yet thoy exist. Some of us
indulge in criticism to no effect
because some of those criticized
care nothing for it The man
who truly advances does not show
that he cares for the opinions of
others yet ho does euro and
what's more lie shapes his actions
in conformity therewith He
might not admit it yet he does it.
Ah with individuals so is it with
municipalities. Cities are but
congregations of individuals and
human nature is as evident in their
make-up and actions as it is in
those of individuals.
Now San Angolo is no excep-
tion to the rule.
Some say good of our city some
say other than good. JoalotiHy
doesn't always cause tho opinions
of tho latter any more than in tho
individual case.
San Angolo has received much
free advertising at the hands of
our noighhoriim towns and their
newspapers. This city gets criti-
cized and rather severely at limes
ai theso same hands. Hut ought
wo to say we don't care. It we
do say so it ought to bo evasive
because we ought to care.
Some of our neighbors say wo
are great some of them cast slurs
at us some of them throw ho-
(piots. Aro wo to pay attention to
what thoy say?
Yes! i
If thoy criticize lot's correct
tho faults thoy see in us. If thoy
conmlimont let's examine our-
solvos and see if wo bo desorving.
If bo let us bo proud.
Ono says: "put asido your
biekorings ovor small things and
got good schools ; another:
"Now h your chance to gut some
thing good vidothe Foderal build-
ing" ; another: "Remain incor-
porated it's your best advertise-
ment and it gives you standing
besides you owe some money and
folks who don't pay their debts
aro not thought well of." There
aro many of these bits of advice.
Will wo notice them? Or will
wo say we don't care what they
say?
