Does advertising pay? If
yon wint to sell we should say
it docs. We advertised a small
plantation and stock for rent a
few days ago instructing appli-
cants to "call at this office." In
les3 than two days after it ap-
peared wo received a dozen
calls. Now here is a demon-
stration that advertising is the
way to do business.
Storm. Last Sunday night
a storm passed over Chappell
Hill. It blew down Jonces and
unroofed a few houc3. One
house tenanted by an old gen-
tleman and his wife was blown
down and the inmates were
caught in the debris and yet
almost marvelous to tell neitli-
cr of them was seriously injur-
ed though we believe each re-
ceived some slight bruises.
Not Guilty. Jim Napoleon
a well known frecdman ot this
counry was tnea on JMOnday
last before tho county court on a
charge of resisting au officer
while in the discharge of his
duty. He plead his own case
before tho jury and this tact
alone saved him from a heavy

effect upon the jury and thpy
actpiited him. Counssllor M.
T. Kurtz of the Brenham bar
assisted in the defence.
The H. F. T- Council m this
city appears to be in a flourish-
ing condition. At the meeting
last 3Ionday niglit there were
four initiations and at tho meet
ing the Monday night previous
thero were seven. The mem-
bers like -all people are when
in earnest are rather reticent
and carefully avoid blatant ha-
rangues about local option.
But they have quietly accom-
plished much good and are des

But we cannot forbear saying
that several of the ladies who
sang possess voices clear as a

misnomer to designate some of

A TmFF Nailed. The fine
silver watch found on tho per-
son of the thief. Ed. Everett
when arrested was stolen fiom
John Wamock the fireman who
runs with Tom Hicks Kugin-
eer on the Central Railroad be-
tween Ilearne and Houston. It
was stolen on the 10th ot April
last. The whereabouts of an-
other fine watch is also known
to the police. A fine ix shoot-
er stolen from a livery stable at
Austin last week will doubtless
be claimed by its owner to-day.
Everett is a professional thiet
and a portion ot the stolen
money taken from the saloon
burglarized on the 2d inst. in
this city wa3 found on his per-
son when arrested. His partner
now in the calaboose says Ever-
ett proposed a plan to break
into the saloon a day or two
previously but he would not
listen to it. He declares his
innocence but is certain that
Everett planned the mischief.
He has turned States evidence
against Everetb-and a conviction
for felony will soon follow. The
city police are entitled to much
credit for arresting the danger-
ous sneak thief Everett. Bren-

TniEVEs Arrested. The city
police arrested two white men

suspicions characters and since
their committal to the calaboose
evidence has been found where
one of them will he shown to
have been a professional thief
some sixty dollars worth of sto-
len property having been found
on his person.
Officer Doran requests ns not
to publish any farther particu-
lars at present until the own-

other important information
which will be of great interest
to the public at the proper

From a letter addressed to C.
C. Garrett Esq.. by O. II. Hol-
lingswortb Secretary ot Board
ot Education we learn that the
amount of one thousand two
hundred dollars has been award-
ed to the public free schools of
the city of Brenham by Dr. B.
Sears Gen'l Agent of the Pea-
body Fund. This will afford
valuable assistance to rt good
cause and we trust will be ap-
preciated by the beneficiaries.
Keep Cool. This is good ad-
vice and should not be neglect-
ed by anyone. Now the way
to do this is to step into the
neat and capacious ice cream
saloon of Mrs. Ilartwcll & Gav
in under the Alcxtyre iiotel.
This is one of the most comfort-
abb establishments of the kind
in the State. It is a place where
ladies and gentlemen much do
congregate. We called a few
evenings ago and found a grand
concourse of ladies and gentle-
men present.
N Firc Alarm. The fire bell
sounded the alarm about eight
o'clock Wednesday night. It
proved to be in a stable near the
Mclntyre Hotel and was easily
extinguished. How it originat-
ed was what we could not learn
but is believed to be the work
of an incendiary.
Another fire alarm was rung
at 12 o'clock M. yesterday
Supposed to be in the second
story of the building occupied
by Wood & Co as a drug store.
The firemec and citizens turn-
ed out promptly and great ex-
citement for awhile was visible
as fire could not be discovered
but the house was filled with
smoke The floor of one of the
rooms in the second story was
cut up and several matches
which had been lighted and a
few not used were found near a
mouse nest. No fire Was seen
at all. The smoke ceased and
and the matter is a mystery to
our brave firemen and citizens.
Did the matches'-found near
the nest of the mouse set the
fire.? This is the mystery. Great
credit is due the firemen and dep
uty sheriffs M. H. Williams and
Tom Day for their gallant con-
duct. Cilj ConncH Proceedlnjs.
