There arc several
species of
millet which arc extensively
cultivated in different parts
of the world for f jdder but what

niiile Labor Iii'Dcmand.
Texas wants white labor. The
late enlrancliishcd 'Southern
citizen does not love to work
and regards loafing as oiie of
the prerogatives ot his status.
It was supposed at one time
that white men could not stand
to labor in the cotton and sugar
fields and that the Southern
climate waa not adapted to farm
culture of aby kind by the
white race which belief deter-
red -white emigration to the
Southern States. This howev-
er was an crronpous impression'
tor since the treedonj and en-
franchisement 'Of.-the colored
man neces3ityJi:is'forced the
whio'ihiiD into tlieTicld. and it
is now an'-establialied fact that
the climate isjadapted to white
field labor "and that the white
man can endure. as much and
perforin as mnch or more labor
than the colored man and the
consequences is that many
poor white laboring men and
fanners with small means 'are
securing a handsome compe-
tency by cultivating .but a few
acres of Tcsa3 .soil. Great'

The B.ursEE lias recently been enlarged to a thirty-two
column paper: being now the largest paper ever published In the
county lt is the only English newspaper published in the county
and is the acknowled organ ot the Democracy ot Austin "Washing-
ton and Burleson counties. Its" columns are always well filled
with items of State and general news as well as sound and inter-
esting Editorials upon all the important topics ot the day.
The Banner is and always has heen the steadfast friend of the
poor and working clo&; as such has labored for their interest aud
advancement by favoring and advocating the ennnigration to onr
county of intelligent and industrious whitk men. It pdvoeates the
speedy development of the vast resources of our great and grow-
ing State by encouraging the establishment of manufactories Oi
all kinds; favoring Railroad communication with sections ot pui
State not yet penetrated by existing lines.
The Banker is a zealous worker in behalf ot Brenham and
"Washington county. Coming to Brenham in January 1S53 when-
it was but a small village of 300 inhabitants we have watched its
onward march of improvement with great pride and satisfaction:
until now instead of 300 her population is near 4000 souls aiK
still her progress is onward. During this time (20 years) we havr
been in some way connected with her journalism working and stri
ving for the posperity of our town and we expect to continue oui
labors unremittingly merely asking a liberal and sustaining pat-
ronage at the hands of tho public we have so long and faithfully
served.
Politically the Banner has ever -been found battling for the
triumph of the true and living principles of the Democraticfparty
and as a Democrat have yielded a cordial and hearty support t
Gov. Coke and our present State Government. We discuss al1
public issues from a strictly democratic standpoint independent
of any clique or ring.
TnE Banner opposes- and deprecates the extravagance ant3
corruption ot the party now controlling thettfl'airs of the General
Government and favors an early restoration of the same into the
care and guidanceof competent and honest officials the true rep-
resentatives ot the people. It also favors the most rigid economy
in the administration of the affairs of Government both Stato am
Federal that labor may be lightly burdened by taxation.
