McMurry University
is proud to recognie
April 8. 2006 as Judge
Howard Green Day.
As an advocate for the
game of baseball it is
only lilting that the day
honoring Green was
built around events of
America's past time.
Green was a member
ol the McMurry baseball
club from 1940-43
where he played catcher
and helped the Indians
compete in the Abilene
City League. Green was
one of the top hitters on
the team and finished
his collegiate career
hitting over .300.
When he graduated
Irom McMuiry in 1943.
his baseball days were
far from over. Altera
short stint in the United
States military from
Indians take
series from
Schreiner
(April 8) McMurry
baseball team continues
to keep themselves
in contention for the
postseason as it split
Saturday and took two out
of three from Schreiner
in the weekend series.
After a 12-11 win
Friday the Indians took
the second game 2-0 and
dropped the final game of
the series 8-5 as Schreiner
avoided the sweep. Greg
Erickson threw his second
shutout of the season in
game two striking out a
season high 1 1 batters and
allowed just three hits.

-The Indian baseball
team took two more
games from Mary Hardin-
Baylor in Belton Saturday
winning 9-3 in the seven-
inning first game and 5-1
in the nine-inning series
finale. The wins move the
team to 19-8 overall and
more importantly it places
them at 8-4 in American
Southwest Conference
West Division play.
Greg Erickson and
Andy McDougal each
picked up wins from
the mound Saturday
and Albert Carriales
closed out each game
of the scries without
giving up a hit.

father of the Abilene Blue
Sox in 1946. serving as
general manager and
co-ow tier. I le stayed
with the Blue Sox

seasons before making

the youngest league
president in the history of
the minor leagues when
he led the Longhorn
League. The organiation
included clubs in
Sweetwater. Vernon.
Big Spring. Midland.
Ballingerand Odessa.
Green then left West
Texas and headed lo the
coast to found the Gull
Coast Leauue. which

ROCK -The McMurry
men's goll team won
Round Rock's West
Region Invitational in
dominating fashion
winning by nine strokes
over the runner up
Claremont McKenna.
Rode McElreath
took home the medal
shooting a 215 in three
rounds of competition
including a tie for the
tournament's best-round
score yesterday shooting
a 70 in round two.
He shot a 72 to
open the tournament
and finished Tuesday
with a 73 to finish with
a three-stroke victory
over Clarcmont's Luke
family of
consisted of teams from
Lufkin. Jacksonville
Port Arthur Galveston
Lake Charles. La.
and Crow ley. La.
He also headed up
the Big State League
in 1951 before being
elected in 1954 to the
executive committee of
the National Association
of Professional Baseball
Leagues representing the
23 B. C and D leagues
in the United States.
Though he left
his career in baseball
organiation in 1956. he
still stayed close to the
game by founding the
Flem Hall-Bill Ruggles
chapter of The Society
for American Baseball
Research. In 1 992. the
Texas Baseball Hall
of Fame Showcase
honored Green.

latter team ran a 3:57.84.
Redlern. Larry Courtney
finished fourth overall
with a 220 and shot a 72
in the final round Tuesday.
Chase Watson also
finished in the top 20
tying for 14th place with
a scoie of 225. Though he
shot an 80 in the opening
round he bounced
back to shoot a 72 in
the second round and a
73 in the final round.
The American
Southwest Conference
also had seven other
participants represented
other than McMurry.
Texas Lutheran finished
fifth overall LeTourncau
tied for sixth UT-Tylcr
placed eighth and Hardin-
Simmons finished ninth.
Mary-Hardin-Baylor
Louisiana College and
UT-Dallas were also
in the tournament.
Judge Howard Green
He began a decade
of service to the Texas
Legislature in 1956 before
serving as a county judge
until 1974. Later he
served as Tarrant County
Treasurer until 1982.
While Green was a
student at McMurry he
served as the sports editor
for both the War Whoop
and the Totem and was
a member and served as
Chancellor of Ko Sari
along with his four years
on the baseball team.
In 1996 he was
named a distinguished
alumnus by the university
and just a year later on
May 3 1997 he was
inducted into McMurry
Athletic Hall of Honor.
Since 1982 Green
was a financial supporter
of the Indian Club the
athletic endowment the

McMurry track team
went across town
Saturday to Elmer Gray
Stadium to compete in
the Oliver Jackson Open
on the campus of Abilene
Christian University.
Three men automatically
qualified for the national
outdoor meet while two
others provisionally
qualified. The men's
4X 100-meter relay
and the 4 X 400-meter
relay teams qualified
provisionally as well.
The women's team
also had a strong outing as
three individuals qualified
provisionally for the
national meet and both
relay teams improved on
its marks from last week
to set a better provisional
qualifying mark.
Courtney Chaney
broke her own school
record in the hammer
throw with a mark
of 161 feet and five
inches to provisionally
qualify for the national
meet. Staci Jackson
provisionally qualified
for three different events
after running a 12.23
mark in the 100-meter
dash ran the 200-meter
dash in 24.93 seconds
and ran the 400-meter
run in 57.47 seconds.
Nicole Salerno
improved on her
provisional qualifying
mark in the pole vault
with a jump of II feet
and 6 14 inches.
The relay team of

100-meter relay. Jessica
Jordan joined Williams
Jackson and Wright to run

Ollison ran the 100-meter
dash in 10.48 seconds
and he also provisionally
qualified for the 200-
meter run and the long
jump with a time of 2 1 .37
in the 200 and a jump of
23 feet and one inch.
Green finished just
behind Ollison in the 100-
meter dash with a time
of 10.57 seconds but it
was enough to give him
the automatic nod for the
national outdoor meet.
Kelvin Figgs' time of
14.44 seconds in the 110-
meter hurdles set a school
record and automatically
qualified him for the
national meet. Lcroy
Johnson provisionally
qualified in the triple
jump with a mark of 46
feet and 3 34 inches.
The men's relay
teams also qualified
provisionally for the
national outdoor meet.

thc4X 100-meter relay
while Rafcal Matthews
Mikalik Daniel Griggs
and Ollison ran a time
of 3: 15.59 in the men's
4 X 400-meter relay.

renovated Indian Stadium.
