EDITORIAL
Bad Weather Bomb Shelter Blues
By Tony Kinscy Editor
It hns fit my mood lately to
dwell on such morose sub-
jects ns tornadoes and
H-bombs and recently dur-
ing a period of unusual elec-
trical turbulence in m
mind I wondered "Just
where in heck docs a person
go around here when
threatened by foul weather
or thermonuclear attack?"
These thoughts heigh-
tened by the testing of
Abilene's civil defense
alarms lately have evolved
into nightmarish scenarios
(a habit of mine) in which I
imagine myself diving into
eulverts and bar ditches or
under the big desk in the
War Whoop office hoping
against hope that I am not
disintegrated or swept up
into the clouds
Sometimes however I
look at the bright side and
admit to myself that if I'm
disintegrated at least it'll be
a quick death or if I'm swept
up into the clouds at least I'll
have reached heights that I
could never hope to reach
otherwise Cheery thoughts
as those are what keep me
going
Seriously though how
prepared will we McMurry
folk be if a big mean-looking
tornado cuts across Abilene
with its malicious eyes cast
upon our campus9 Is the
campus center low enough to
provide much protection or
would that glass surround-
ing the central courtyard kill
everyone in the vicinity
when the fierce winds turn it
into millions of deadly projec-
tiles9 Is there any campus-
wide plan for getting people
to what shelter there is
whether basements or fall-
out shelters in the event of a

tornado'
Now I'm not as worried
about H-bombs as I am about
tornadoes since if one of
those babies hits Dyess any
effort townrd self-
preservation is liable to be
futile however it seems to
me that active measures
could be taken to lessen the
casualty rate when tor-
nadoes strike Simple things
such us notifying the stu-
dents where shelter is would
be helpful ond posting in-
structions about what to do
in an emergency (not just
tornadoes but fire and other
disasters whether manmade
or natural) would lessen the
carnage considerably
From what I've seen of
McMurry's civil defense to
date I would say that the
college's policy reflects Lord
Alfred Tennysons' old Blurb
"More things are wrought by
prayer than the mojonty of
mankind ever dreams of" If
this is the case I hope I'm
wearing my pruyer shawl
next time there's a tornudo
warning Otherwise clear
the path between me and the
library bomb shelter'
Studio McMurry
will not be open
until May 3rd due
to the many ban-
quets and other ac-
tivities taking
place this month.
