There's one thing that's as certain as death and taxes:
Any time the bonrd of trustees come to campus there's
an extreme shortage of controversial issues. Or at least
they're kept rather quiet. So in order to avoid such
timely topics as the parking situation or what time of
the year it is I've cancelled my editorial this week and
instead will talk entertainment.
Un Columnist Goes to the Movies
The Academy Awards are coming up again in the
near future and it's time to make my picks. Of course
with the Abilene movie method of booking flicks (how
many times has "Benji" been here now?) some of the
nominees won't get here until 1983. So I can't be very
unbiased.
Of those I've seen though "Goodbye Girl" gets my
vote for everything it's up for. That movie had pazzazll! I
left feeling something besides "why did I spend my three
bucks here?"
Neil Simon's scripts are really clever and well-
constructed. And with Richard Dreyfuss Marsha
Mason and Quinn Cummings (the ultra-cute ten-year-old)
doing the film it couldn't go wrong.
As for "Annie Hall" Woody Allen did an admirable
job on his script. He is also noted for an overabundance
of clever lines. And who's better to deliver these clever
quips than Allen himself and Diane Kcaton?
However it would have been nice if Woody and his
co-writers had bothered to develop some type of plot to
go along with it.
Sneak Preview: Mel Brooks Does It Again!
No! I'm not talking about "Silent Movie." If he had
done that again I wouldn't even be wasting this space
for him. But his newest film is called "High Anxiety"
another cliche take-off on an American film classic.
This time Brooks' "sacred cow" is the master of sus-
pense Alfred Hitchcock.
"High Anxiety" does to Hitchcock winners (like
"Psycho" "The Birds" etc.) what "Young Frankens-
tein" did to all those old flicks. The more you're familiar
with Hitchcock films the funnier this new Mel Brooks'
movie will be.
But if you've not been blessed with these often-used
"Lute Show" reruns Mel's story will tickle you anyway.
Brooks plays a famous psychiatrist who is named direc-
tor of the Institute for the Very VERY Nervous a
mental home whose operations are anything but hon-
est. Harvey Korman plays Dr. Montague the master-
mind behind these dirty dealings. His accomplice
Nurse Diesel (complete with a white face jet black hair
and thin mustache) is insanely created by Cloris
Leachman.
Madeline Kahn lets her hair become bleached blonde
and plays the attractive young girl who's father is trap-
ped inside the home. She's tired of paying $2000 a
month for his care and is suspicious.
The movie is full of surprises and will give an
evening's entertainment. So if this film gets to Abilene
before you graduate it's highly recommended.
Notes:
Ya'll have an exciting Spring Break and good luck at
finding a place to park when you come back! (Was that
controversial?)
