Indian Speedsters Burn Their
Way To Second Place Finish
The McMurry trnck team
garnered 89 points Inst Thurs-
day to place second in the Ok-
lahoma Baptist Invitational at
Shawnee Oklahoma.
The showing was the best
(point-wise) for the Indians this
season.
Scnsonnl-bcsts were turned in
by Armando Zapata in both the
shot put and discus events.
Zapata the junior from San An-
tonio putted the iron ball 46-0 to
win the shot and then threw the
discus 143-10 to place first in
that event. Zapata's previous
bests were 45-1V4 and 143-7.
Sprinter Steve Mays was the
victim of circumstance at the
meet ob he and teammates
Wayne Recce and Napolcan
JongBon lined up to run the 100
yard dash. Meet officials had
unknowingly marked off 92
yards for the vent and when tho
timers reviewed the clockings
they were astounded to find that
Mays had run a 9 1 Reeces a 9.2
and Johnson a 9.3
Incidentally the Indians
swept the first three places in
that event.
As they did in the 220 where
Johnson posted a mediocre 23.8
and was followed by Reece and
Keith Gipson.
Distance-man Jose Alforo
won the 880 in 2:10.0 and then

To Attend Camp
Nineteen students from the
Tri-College ROTC ore scheduled
to attend the 1978 Fort Riley
Advanced Camp in Kansas from
June to mid-July. The group of
men will be among about 3200
college students from 16 states
to attend the ROTC camp.
In a letter to these students
from the Campus Commander
Brig. Gen. Daniel W. French
the general says "The training
you will undergo during the
1978 Advanced Camp will bo
both mentally and physically
demunding; some of the situa-
tions you will encounter will test
the limit of your capabilities."
Rapelling off the side of cliffs;
sliding down ropes from a 90
floor tower and dropping into a
lake; firing rifles machine guns
and artillery; driving tanks and
armored personnel carriers;
crossing water obstacles on rope
bridges; these are some of the
places cadets will spend their
summer.
Other lessons of camp such as
leadership nnd military tactics
will be taught not in clas-
srooms but in the field. Learn-
ing by doing is the objective for
cadets at the ROTC camp.
Cadets who successfully com-
plete camp will either return to
the campus to complete their
degree requirments or will be
commissioned as officers in the
Active Army its Reserve or Na-
tional Guard.
