Suicide is the second greatest
killer of college students. And
while not all students are on the
brink of suicide many are
experiencing problems in
dealing with the pressures and
responsibilities facing them.
In response to this need the
HP administration has
designated Anne Nelson to the
position of counselor in order to
provide professional guidance
and assistance for students.
She has a bachelor's degree in
psychology from Ouachita
University and a Master's
Degree in Counselor Education
from the University of
Arkansas.
"Primarily I see counseling
as part of an educational
process" Mrs. Nelson said.
"Let's talk about small
problems before they get to be
big problems" she said.
"I see my role as helping
people find what they want with
their lives helping someone try
to discover what may be
blocking them in academic

pursuits" she said. She sees
the need now for workshops or
groups dealing with areas of
test anxiety reduction study
skills and relaxation
techniques.
Problems often arise in
students lives because of
depression or a lack of hap-
piness. "Happiness is such an
up-and-down thing-an elusive
thing. If you spend all your time
hunting happiness it will likely
elude you. It comes more often
as a by-product of a useful life"
said Ms. Nelson.
How does she relate her faith
in God to her role as counselor?
"I feel Jesus was primarily
interested in the individual-He
went out of His way to help a
person with his problems. I'm
interested in helping the in-
dividual cope with his
problems helping him become
an efficient person" she said.
So you're not on the verge of
taking your life. Why go to a
counselor? "If you're getting
absences not passing classes
having financial problems; if
you're having trouble con-
centrating headaches or
homesickness; if you can't
decide your major parents are
divorcing or there's a death in
the family; if you're having
trouble with your roommate
parents or girlfriend or
boyfriend; in short anything
that may produce tension or
anxiety might be helped
through the professional
assistance of a counselor" said
Mrs. Nelson.
All counseling is kept con-
fidential. Students may contact her at
extension 274 to set a time for
counselling that will fit into
their schedule. If she is not
there call the office of Student
Affairs at extension 276 and
leave your name and a number
where you can be reached. In
case of an emergency she may
be reached at 646-2707.
