Volunteers
needed by
program
An all volunteer reading
tutoring program is being
sponsored by Sunset Baptist
Mission in cooperation with
Howard Payne according to
Mrs. Penny Tongate of the
education department.
Students will be tutoring 24
grade students at North West
elementary School during
afternoon. Students may come
at any time during the af-
ternoon to work with their
student and each student will
only have to work with one
child Mrs. Tongate said.
Very simple material will be
used in the program and Mrs.
Tongate commented students
will be instructed how to use the
material.
Mrs. Tongate said that ad-
ditlonal students particulary
male were needed to work with
the children.

Academy of
Freedom
applications
being accepted
All Juniors who are joining the
Academy of Freedom and are
not on scholarship should turn

Marie Rhines to appear in concert
sponsored by Student Union Board
Marie Rhines widely-known
and accomplished fiddler will
perform in concert Thursday
Sept. 30 in Mima Auditorium on
the Howard Payne University
campus.
The 8 p.m. program ii
sponsored by the university's
Student Union Board (SUB).
"Marie Rhines is not a
bluegrass band square dance
fiddler singing cowpoke
mountain old timer Irish banu
or Scottish bagpiper" says
Nancy Weeks SUB cultural
events chairman. "But she is a
little of each in her concerts.
Marie Rhines began her
caceer as a classical violinist
and was educatd at Yale
University and New England
Conservatory. She studied
violin under Joseph Silversteln
concertmaster of the Boston
Symphony Orchestra.
She expanded her field to
include programs of authentic
fiddle styles and now divides
her concert time between folk
Senate hears brief
committee reports
minor business
Senate met for a scant fifty
minutes to hear brief reports of
top senate projects last Tuesday
night in the Student Association
offices.

' During the past year she has
given more than 50 fiddle
concerts across the United
States and abroad including
Committee Reports
The Elections Committee
chaired by Senior Frank Grewe
reported that the recent fresh-
man and special elections went
well and that there were no
problems. There was a poor
turn-out however and only
38.9. percent of all eligible
voters cast a ballot. Grewe also
said that as an added sidelight
to next month's elections a
presidential preference vote
would be taken. The election is
set for Oct. 12.
SA Treasurer Steve Jones
chairman of the leadership lab
committee reported that he
had not heard from Mrs. Pat
Kircher the proposed
speaker. He said he would
contact her very soon.
The Student Directory project
was completed and final costs
were set at $96 according to
Chairman Rusty Tasker.
Joylynn Williams
Homecoming co-chairman
reported that the committee
had met for the first time this
week and that a few ideas had
been discussed. A preliminary
theme had also been conceived.
The Handicap Committee
chaired by Sophomore Senator
Randy Skinner reported that
his committee was planning to
contact Texas Tech. Texas
AlcM and Texas to see how
their campus structure aided
the crippled attending there.
Skinner also said they had
evaluated all the buildings on
campus.

Nominations for
class honors pending
Nominations will be held
Friday October 1 for class
favorites Lasso Beauties Mr.
and Mrs. HPU and Friendliest
Freshmen and Upper
Classman with the elections to
follow on Oct. 12 as listed on the
university calendar.
The nominations will be by
write-in balloting during
chapel. If tie votes make a run-
off necessary in any of the
categories it will be held at the
next regular election date as
specified in the official Student
Senators Bruce Welch Gary
Thompson and Jerry Hartt
were put in charge of finding out
whether a shuttle bus could run
by Sid Richardson Hall.
Senators approved SA
President Sabatini's choice for
parliamentarian. Bob Gooding
SA vice president will serve in
that capacity.
SA Treasurer Steve Jones
reported that $2 was spent by
the senate on bookstore charges
and senate's balance stands at
2159.74.
Minor Business
Sabatini said that he had not
yet found a chairman for the
Food Committee.
Sophomore President
Dwyane Keltner was absent.
Sabatini said that he would
contact Mr. Frank Brister and
ask if he would remain as
senate faculty sponsor.
Howard Payne com-
memorative plates are being
sold by the sophomore class and
will be sold at Homecoming
according to Mrs. Johnle Beth
Pitts class sponsor.
There was such a positive
response from last year's sale
especially from the ex students
that additional plates were
ordered for this year's
Homecoming.
The plates cost $6 and may be
ordered by leaving your name
with Mrs. Pitts Box 445
campus mail.
Old Main is featured on the
plate and past HP presidents
are listed on the back of the
plate.

a. Must have the necessary
hours at the time of the-
nomination to be considered a
member of that class.
b. Nominations shall be made
only by the respective class
members.

run-off election held at the next

classman and Freshman

than thirty (30) hours and the
