Affairs of the Association
L. TUFFLY ELLIS
As the Association enters its seventy-sixth year, its attention is
broadening to include a wider range of interests. More frequently
now than in many years past, people are awakening to the reality
of Texas-a land of contrast. The diversity of the backgrounds of
its people, the varied geography of the sections, the diversity of its
politics, economics, and social and religious make-up, its position
in the South and West, and its proximity to Mexico provide an at-
traction to almost anyone who has the opportunity and time to study
the state. The scope of this interest is, perhaps, best reflected now
at the Annual Meeting.
ANNUAL MEETING
The seventy-sixth Annual Meeting was the best attended-over
8oo registered-in the Association's history. Held in Fort Worth,
the program included sixteen sessions, ranging from architectural
history to historical geography. The work of the program committee
(James V. Reese, chairman; Sandra L. Myres; Edward H. Phillips;
Frank H. Smyrl; Robert H. Thonhoff; Ronnie C. Tyler; and Margaret
Waring) is recognized and appreciated.
The Fort Worth local arrangements committee (A. M. Pate, Jr.,
chairman; Herman Crow; Jenkins Garrett; William Hughen; Mitchell
Wilder; Lyle Williams; Robert Williamson; and Donald E. Worcester)
set a standard that will be difficult to emulate. We also want to ac-
knowledge the outstanding work of former staff member Mary Shields
(now Mrs. Jim B. Pearson) and Narcie Crosby for their outstanding
effort in handling the hotel operations.
At the business meeting following the Friday luncheon the follow-
ing officers were elected for the year 1972-1973: President: Roger
N. Conger; Vice Presidents: Anne Brindley, Ralph A. Wooster, Billy
Mac Jones, and Dan E. Kilgore. T. R. Havins was reelected to a
three-year term as a fellows' representative on the executive council.
Edward H. Phillips, Austin College, was elected as a members' rep-
resentative to the same body.
