Southwestern Historical Quarterly
The book auction, named in memory of William Ransom Hogan
and Chris Emmett, netted $1,900.
The 1973 Annual Meeting will be held March 8-10o, at the Stephen
F. Austin and the newly renovated Driskill hotels in Austin. The
program committee (Ronnie C. Tyler, chairman; Robert Calvert;
James V. Reese; Marilyn McAdams Sibley; and Robert H. Thonhoff)
is planning the sessions for the 1973 meeting.
The nominations committee (Rupert N. Richardson, chairman;
Anne Brindley; Clifton Caldwell; Llerena B. Friend; and Vera Dugas)
is now receiving recommendations for nominees to serve on the execu-
tive council in place of those whose terms will expire in 1973. Anyone
wishing to make suggestions for possible nominations should contact
the committee's chairman.
The H. Bailey Carroll Award of $2oo for the best article in Volume
LXXV was presented to David M. Vigness for his translation and an-
notation of "Nuevo Santander in 1795: A Provincial Inspection by
Felix Calleja," which appeared in the April issue. The Coral Horton
Tullis Memorial Prize of $2oo for the most outstanding contribution
to Texas history for 1971-1972 was awarded to C. Alwyn Barr for
his study From Reconstruction to Reform.
MID-YEAR MEETING
The mid-year meeting was held at Marshall and Jefferson on No-
vember 27 in connection with history groups of East Texas. Pro-
fessor Randolph Campbell, North Texas State University, presented a
paper on "Slavery in Harrison County 1850-186o." After a tour
of the history museum at Marshall, the visitors motored over to the
Hotel Excelsior at Jefferson for lunch. President Dorman H. Winfrey
spoke on the Junior Historians. The group then toured historic spots
of Jefferson. Professor Seth Walton, East Texas Baptist College, han-
dled the local arrangements.
The 1972 mid-year meeting will be held at Abilene, October 28,
in connection with the West Texas Historical Association. Professor
Rupert N. Richardson, Hardin-Simmons University, is in charge of
local arrangements.
