Affairs of the Association
Vidaurri and the Southern Confederacy" is scheduled for a winter
release. The printers have now started revising galley on Volume III
of the Handbook of Texas. Eldon Branda, Crystal Ragsdale, Melinda
Wickman, Paul Lofton, and Donna Shipley are working against a rigid
time schedule to complete the volume.
The editors of the Quarterly take this opportunity to thank the
historians who submitted articles for us to consider for publication.
We also want to recognize the assistance given us by outside readers
of the manuscripts, and especially by our excellent editorial advisory
board: Felix D. Almaraz, Jr.; Robert A. Calvert; Lewis L. Gould;
Marilyn McAdams Sibley; and Ronnie C. Tyler. Barbara Stockley, the
Quarterly's assistant editor, and Theresa Jamail, editorial assistant, have
done excellent work for the Association during the past year.
MEMBERSHIP
Billy Mac Jones, president of Southwest Texas State University,
put on a vigorous campaign during the past year to boost membership.
As chairman of the membership committee, Jones has been highly
innovative and has carried on an extensive mailing campaign to
solicit new members. While most historical societies are witnessing a
decline in memberships, your Association's is continuing to grow.
At the Annual Meeting the Executive Council found it necessary
to raise the dues. Escalating printing costs of the Quarterly are the
primary reason. Dues are now as follows: regular, $1o; student, $5;
life, $200; sustaining, $500; and patron, $i,ooo. These are the first
increases since 1962.
JUNIOR HISTORIAN PROGRAM
Ken Ragsdale and Larry Perry consolidated gains made over the
past several years in the Junior Historian program. In March, Larry
left the Association to join the Texas Education Agency. Lucretia
Graham has joined our staff as his replacement. Lucretia brings a
varied and interesting background to the Junior Historian program.
She taught school in Louisiana, assisted in the editing of the Journal
of Economic Issues, and for the past year has worked for the Texas
State Historical Survey Committee.
The Junior Historian annual meeting was held in Austin on
April 7 and 8, 1972. Land Commissioner Robert L. Armstrong was
the principal luncheon speaker. James V. Reese from Texas Tech
presented the various awards.119
