THE WAR WHOOf
I Editorials
Rtlrfiws EtfvciHM
Down through the centuries religion has played a vital
role in education. The church first began education for all
men of every class; thru the Dark Ages the church kept
learning alive when everyone else had forgotten it; and then
came the Renaissance and Reformation when the church held
up the light of education and culture that men might find
their way out of the darkness which so long had covered
them.
Today as in every age religion points the way. It is the
conscience for nil of life. The Christian world watched anx-
iously as Hitler banished religion from Germany. A war was
fought to destroy a tyranny that threatened to engulf the
world. And now the shadow of another great world power
threatens to destroy religion and all mankind places its hope
in those Christian nations that hold aloft the freedom and
dignity of man which Christianity teaches. Today perhaps
more than ever we appreciate the words of Abraham Lin-
coln who said "America is the last best hope of earth" and
Christianity teaches that hope.
In America today secularization has crowded religion
out of so many vital parts of our activities that people every-
where are looking to the church to keep the way of the
cross clearly before them. In answer to this need institutions
like McMurry wore established.
As our graduates go out to take to the world what they
have been given here -and as we proudly see the fruits of
their labor I am reminded of the prophet Isaiah when he
said. "The people that walked in darkness have seen a great
light." Ann Brock.
Seek Ye First
As Christians wc are taught to have in us that mind
which was in Christ Jesus. St. Paul tells us in Romans 8:9
"if any man have not the spirit of Christ he is none of His."
And when we come to know the mind of Christ we make the
discovery that He has taught man to "seek first the Kingdom
of Cod and His righteousness.
Last week we had a fine speaker on the campus who
said that the objective of education could be stated in the
words "Thy Kingdom Come." The catalog of our institu
tion states: McMurry College shall have as its purpose the
guidance of growing persons in achieving a personality after
the pattern of Christ ... It shall make the teachings and
spirit of Jesus the controlling point of reference for its
life." This McMurry seeks to achieve through the entire spirit
of the Reservation. As one lives on the campus he becomes
aware of it in the friendly spirit prevailing in devotions at
Assembly and weekly Chapel in grace at meals in Chris'
tian Foundation in Willson Lectures and Religious Emphasis
Week in classroom and dormitory and in counseling with
Christian faculty members.
In addition to the required courses which every student
takes many other courses are offered to train workers and
leaders for the work of the church at home and abroad
These workers include Ministers Missionaries Directors of
itengious Education Ministers of Music Pastor's Assistants
Chaplains Religious Counselors Youth Directors etc.
Our catalog states: The work in the department of reli-
gion is designed to afford the general student a working
knowledge of the Bible and to encourage and develop an ap-
preciative understanding of Christianity in its relation to the
world's thought aspiration and relationships. In this way
it is hoped that the student will learn to make religion a re-
source for meeting his problems that he will be helped to
achieve an adequate philosophy of life and prepare himself
for graduate study or for positions of lay leadership in the
church.
An important contribution of the workers in the de-
partment of religion is that of being available for confer-
ences "in every time of need" whether it be for counsel in
religious problems to provide help for a sermon or a first
funeral service a picture for a worship setting to direct a
religious drama or accompany a group on a deputation team.
Wherever one goes in church life over this area he finds
McMurry exes rendering fine leadership. And in these same
communities are former students who are making success-
ful homes and taking places of inflence in professional life
carrying on the great tradition of McMurry. Truly it is an
inspiration to experience this spirit and to be used in help-
ing to carry it to the uttermost parts of the earth. George
J. Steinman.

7:21.
How do you measure a life?
What dimensions apply? Do you
measure it like a string by
length? Are the years a person
occupies this earth a clue to his
effectiveness? Methuselah lived
969 years which is about all that
can be said of him. Jesus Christ
was thirty -three when he was
crucified. There is more to life
than length of years.
Do you measure life like a
board by breadth? Is the index
to a life how much it has ex-
tended itself in influence? Is life
measured in terms of domination?
Alexander the Great ruled the
world and then wept because
there were no more worlds to con-
quer. Hitler ran roughshod over
Europe held millions in his iron
grip. And so Mussolini and Stalin.
But no one in his right mind
would want to emulate any of
them!
Do you -measure hfe by its
height? Is greatness measured by
how high a man goes? How much
money he makes how popular
how famous how great his pres-
tige? No you do not measure life
by height by breadth nor by
length. There is another dimen-
sion that gives the clue. In the
Bible a man is measured by
depth. Man is like a tree. Every-
thing depends on its roots. When
storms strike the roots are the
thing. Or man is like a building.
Everything depends upon its foun-
dation. The best superstructure is
useless if the foundation cannot
stand the stress and strain.
Prayer May wc dwell deep
our Father in our Christian ex-
periences. May we be rooted and
grounded in Christ and in Thy
Holy Word. In Jesus name we
pray. Amen. Gene Tucker.

Well this week the Chanter's have been gone real gone.
They've been touring around living off the fat of the land and tell-
ing the school as per usual. Next week at this time the band will
be departing for places and parts unknown or known as Europe.
Sounds glamorous huh? Well try it with IS pounds of luggage for
2 weeks. Nasty little stinkers aren't we?
Say did you see the new uniforms yet? They are the absolute
most. What with shoulder boards and all they make the band people
look like a Roosian generalissimo. This is a personal thanks to those
of you who contributed to the uniform fund by attending the bene-
fit concert or by donation. We of the band thamc you very very
much.

Smile
Why is it there are some people who do not know how
to smile? We have a few people on the campus who if
they smiled it seems it would break their faces.
It's easy to smile and most of all it doesn't cost anything.
When I think of Christianity I think of happy people buD-
bling over with happiness and joy and especially people
who can not stop smiling.
Let's try smiling and see what a difference it makes.
Let's All Work Together
Would it be possible to get some of the students to do
some work for McMurry for free? If so we could clean up
the campus try and do a little work on the roads and
maybe even a little painting.
Let's have a clean-up day. Everybody devote one whole
day say maybe a Saturday to cleaning up the campus of our
college. With 60 students giving one day's work we could
make the Reservation a lot more attractive.
Want to try it?
Constitutional Revision
The Student Council is in the midst of revising the Con-
stitution of the Student Association. This is a tremendous
undertaking and it will need a lot of work and concentra-
tion. If you are called upon to work on this project say
"yes." Remember this is your studeht government. You are
an important person in the proper functioning of the stu-
dent association.
