A largo group of McMurry
students are studying for the
ministry or other phases of full-
time religious work. Three men
offer guidance and instruction in
this department.
Dr. George Stcmman head of
the Department of Religion re-
ceived his A.B. from South-
western University in 1924 his
Bachelor of Divinity from the
S.M.U. School of Thelogy in 1927
and his S.T.B. from Yale Divin-
ity School in 1931.
Dr. Steinman came to McMurry
in 1946 as Associate Professor of
Religion and has been head of
the Department of Religion since
1948. He was Dean of Westmin-
ster Junior College at Hehhasu-
cana Texas from 1944-46; Direc-
tor of the Wesley Bible Choir of
Stephen F. Austin State College
at Nacogdoches from 1929-30 and
'from 1940-44; and has been in the
R. E. Major Minor

The department of religion is
one of the largest and most fami-
liar departments on the campus
of McMurry College. The religion
department receives and trains
young men and women for the
pastoral and teaching ministry
the mission field and religious
workers in churches and com-
munities. The religion depart-
ment touches the lives of every

ministry of the Methodist Church
for eleven years.
The religion professor has writ-
ten articles on hobbies and wor-
ship for the Adult Student. Tha
Motiya and Workshop. He is also
on the state roster of speakers of
the Garden Clubs of Texas.
Dr. Roland Schaefcr Associate
Professor of Religion attended
high school in Michigan City
Indiana; received his BA from
Baldwin-Wallace College in 1913;
his MA from the University of
Wisconsin in 1920; and his DD
from Webster University in 1927.
Dr. Schaefer is a member of
the National Education Associa-
tion the Religious Education
Association and the N. A. Bible
Instructors. He came to McMurry
in 1948 after having spent sev-
eral years as a missionary in
China.
Dr. Schaefer is a member of
student on the campus. Six sem-
ester hours of Bible (Bible 115
New Testament and Bible 116
Old Testament) are required of
all candidates for a degree. For
those majoring in Religion 24
hours is the required minimum
18 hours of which must be ad-
vanced. For a minor 18 semester
hours is the minimum required
6 of which must be advanced. Al-
though ministerial students are
advised not to major in religion
they are not prohibited from
doing so. If a ministerial student
does major in religion he will be
required to take besides Bible
115 and 116 Bible 337 447 R.E.
214 R H. 336 and the remainder
in other advanced hours. Also
Speech 112 and 113 are needed.
For Religious Education Workers
majoring in Religion courses re-
quired are Bible 115 and 116
Bible 337 or 447 R.E. 214 224
and 334 R.H. 336 and the re-
mainder in other advanced hours.

Dr. Will-Mathis Dunn is the
College Chaplain pastor of Al-
deisgate Methodist Church and
Professor of Philosophy. Dr. Dunn
received his secondary training at
Yoakum High School of Yoakum
Texas; his A.B. from Southwest-
ern University in 1933; his M.A.
from Drew Theological Seminary
in 1939 and his PhD from Drew
in 1951. Dr. Dunn came to Abi-
lene in 1953 from the pastorate
of the Central Methodist Church
in Austin.
From 1949 through 1952 Dr.
Dunn served as a chaplain in the
U. S. Navy and saw action aboard
the USS Coral Sea from 1943 to
J)45. The minister served as
coach of footbal basketball and
baseball at Emory University
while working on his B.D. degree
and he strongly supports these
and other sports at McMurry.
It is advised for these students to
minor in Business Administration
to strengthen their administrative
work in the Church. The Depart-
ment is divided into six unit3:
Religious Education Biblical Lit-
erature Religious History Homi-
letics Philosophy and Sociology
From these any student may
find a wide and rich area of study
and inspiration in the develop-
ment of his school personal and
social life.
A number of students hold ac-
tive pastorates. Others engage in
youth work and counseling choir
direction secretarial and admin-
istrative duties teaching in Sun-
day School classes and assisting
the pastor in the regular church
services. The religion depart-
ment is actively engaged in the
Texas State Methodist Student
Movement and other state and
national religious organizations.
Last year the state conference of
the Texas Methodist Student
Movement was held on the cam-
pus of McMurry.

Among McMurry s most out
standing characteristics is its De-
partment of Religion headed by
George J. Steinman. Offering a
total of 22 courses related to re-
ligious education Biblical litera-
ture religious history homiletics
and philosophy the department
.offers training for religious edu-
cation majors and minors as
well as ministerial students.
Dr. Roland T. Schaefer and Dr.
Will-Mathis Dunn serve with
Steinman on the Religion De-
partment faculty. Dr. Dunn
teaches courses in philosophy
Dr. Schaefer teaches various
Bible religious education and
religious history courses.
Every student on the campus is
acquainted with the work of the
Department of Religion through
their enrollment in the two re-
quired Bible courses Bible 115
(New Testament literature) and
Bible 116 (Old Testament litera-
ture). Other Bible courses are Bible
332 a study of the Old Testament
prophets; Bible 337 dealing with
the career and significance of
Jesus; and Bible 447 a study of
the life and teachings of Paul.
In the field of religious educa-
tion the department offers such
varied courses as "Religion and
the Arts" a study of the arts of
the church with particular em

Three major religious organ-
izations for students the Chris-
tian Foundation Forum and
Volunteers plus a coordinating
religious council and a drama
group the Wesley Players give
McMurry students a wide choice
of church-related activities.
The general religious organiza-
tion on the campus is the Chris-
tian Foundation. It is not a club
but a definite part of McMurry
College life. Perhaps the most
important work of the Founda-
tion is the sending of Deputation
teams to churches throughout the
Northwest Texas and New Mex-
ico conferences.
Officers in the C.F. are: Jimmy
Forshey president; Charles Hast-
ings vice-president; Tejan Cun-
ningham treasurer; and Anne
Anderson secreary. There are
numerous other commissions and
offices that are filled by the stu-
dents. Dr. Will-Mathis Dunn is
sponsor of the group.
For McMurry men who plan to
enter the ministry and other areas
of full-time Christian service
the Forum provides opportunities
for worship fellowship and ser-
vice. Glenn Chambers heads this
year's Forum and James Bell is
vice-president. Henry Salley is
secretary-treasurer. Dr. George
Steinman is sponsor for the
Forum.
The Volunteers organized in
1948 is open to all young women
on the campus who plan to enter
any Christian vocation. Approx-
imately 60 girls are listed in
the Volunteer organization that

Other religious education cour-
ses particularly useful to the
church worker and pastor deal
with pastor-church relations and
with educational work of the
church.
Closely connected with the De-
partment of Religion is a course
offered by the Music Department
entitled "Church Music for the
Church Worker." This course

Hmkel is designed to provide
ministerial students and church
workers with a knowledge of
church music. It includes a brief
historical survey of church music;
studies on hymnology psalmody
and anthem material for various
choir groups; and a compresen-
sive study of the Methodist
Hymnal.
is sponsored by Dr. and Mrs.
Lloyd Huff.
The present officers of Volun-
teers are Eleanor O'Kelly presi-
dent; Mary Beth Skagga vice-
president; Ella Hill secretary;
Sylvia South treasurer; Mary
Marcum reporter; and Claudine
Hamner historian.
The Religious Council is com-
posed of key members from each
of the organizations.
McMurry's Chapter of Wesley
Players is made up of students
that are interested in Religious
Drama. Jack Pflug heads this
year's Wesley Players while
Gene Davidson is vice-president.
Betty Campbell is secretary and
Mary Beth Skaggs is publicity
chairman. Dr. George Steinman
is sponsor of the group which
lists 40 members on it's roll.
