Introspection
By Phil Hamilton
For Real!
Normally I do not write about anything dealing with sports
choosing instead to leave that area up to the mighty Randy Hylton
but I felt a need to change this week and speak out about the basket-
ball team. Have you been to see our boys play hoop lately? If you
haven't you have missed a great deal. Suddenly the Cowboys are
exciting.
I watched intently last week as the pokes took two quality teams to
the cleaners and let It be known that the Cowboys are not some team
to practice against. The game against Northeast Louisiana was ex-
citing but not near as exciting as the thriller against North Texas State
University. The so-called Mean Green came intc Abilene thinking they
would just roll over little Hardin-Slmmons but they left knowing they
were wrong.
The game opened with a bang as the'pokes hit the first bucket and
Coach Jim Shuler got his his first technical which he did not deserve.
With less than two minutes gone Shuler had been slaped with two
more technicals ejected from the game and NTSU had doubled their
score with technical foul shots. The Cowboys did not let this get them
down as they quickly rebounded to regain the lead again. Unforunatly
by this time the game was out of control as the officials tried to call a
game filled with elbow jabs body checks and a few blows sending
HSU players flying into the stands. What caused the game to get out
of control?
The Cowboys came on the court ready to give NTSU everthlng they
had while NTSU came out to take care of HSU and go home. The
officials came out but they were not ready to call a basketball game.
The officials continously made bad calls and missed fouls on both
teams. In addition they took a hard line attitude against the HSU
bench while allowing the NTSU bench to yell scream and complain.
During the game Shuler was not the only person to have a technical
called. Assistant coach Dale Pond drew one and Darrow Washington
drew one while discussing a play with the assistant coach in addition
Earl Powell was given a two minute lecture from one of the zebras. On
the other hand the coaches for NTSU repeatedly yelled at the referees
stomped in front of the scorekeepers desk and used obscenelanguage
toward the crowd without even receiving a warning. At half-time one
coach for the Mean Green yelled at one zebra for several minutes
before shouting an obscenity at a Hardin-Simmons student. Sorry no
technical called.
I am usually not or . to complain but I believe Hardin-Simmons got
tho shaft. Tht 'Pokes probably played their finest game of the season
and yet they were robbed by the officials of having another mark in the
win column. Five technical fouls adds up to five badly needed points
in a game that came down to a foul shot In the last five seconds of
overtime play. I cannot say HSU would have won the game If the calls
had not been madebut I can say they made a difference in the game.
I was especially disturbed by the actions of some of the NTSU
players and Mean Green fans. I could not believe some of the things
being said on the court following the game. I am glad that HSU had
more respect and dignity than to sink the level of the NTSU fans and
respond with similar obscene remarks. I'm proud of the attitude of the
students of this university.
The Cowboys will be up against the Mean Green again on February
26 In Denton and I would like to see everyone go to Denton and display
support for the Cowboys In a respectful way Let's band together and
arrive In Denton with a large convoy of cars to let NTSU know that
Hardin-Simmons has arrived. I know my car will be in the line that
pulls into Denton on Interstate 35 and I hope many others will Join with
me. As the announcer in Mabee Complex said Saturday "The HSU
Cowboys are for real!"
Editor's Note
The HSU Brand will be placed on the newsstands on
Mondays for the rest of the year to provide a paper
that serves the students beter. ...

Extra campus lights
By PHIL HAMILTON
Brand Editor
It sometimes it takes a violent
act to bring about changes and
this semester has been no excep-
tion due to a recent unfortunate
Incident there is now the posslbll-
ty of adding extra lights around the
campus dormitories.
These extra lights are needed
throughout the entire campus and
in the back of student housing.
Cross the campus In the evening
hours and see how often the-path
is dark. There are lights but many
are covered by trees and are insuf-
ficient for their intended purpose.
Lights are needed along walkways
throughout the campus as well as
around the dorms and student
housing.
There are several disadvantages
to installing the lights. First the
cost to the university to install the
fixtures would be great and the
added cost of electricity would be
expensive. It would also take a
great amount of time to plan and
install a lighting system.
The advantages of having a
lighting system greatly out-weigh
the disadvantages of the project.
The system would be expensive
yet It could possibly save the life of
a student. The Installation of a
lighting system would not only pro-
tect students but it would also
make it easier for Security to patrol
and guard the campus. It would
take a considerable amount of
time to install a system but the
time would be well spent if It pro-
tects just one student.
The administration is already
looking Into putlng lights around
the dorms and I challenge them to
consider a complete lighting
system that meets the needs of the
HSU community.
