the Miners who moved out in

SAFE AS COFFEE
To "coin" a phrase from one
of the great philosophers of the
20th century Doctor David
(Scoop) McPherson "From worse
to worser" could sum up the
events as far as the basketball
team is concerned of the previous
week.
Last Friday and Saturday's
losses to New Mexico A&M and
Texas Western knocked the Pokes
out of any possible chance for
a share of the Border Conference
championship.
"LAST"
The two losses also gave the
Cowboys sole ownership of last
place in both the conference
standings and season standings.
The overall standings through
Tuesday January 17 were

Apparently something drastic
has happened to make a better
than average basketball squad
appear to be a great deal less
than mediocre. One thing that
might be said concerning this
matter is that the team has not
been without the support of the
student body in spite of a season
that has been slightly less than
colorful.
Since three of the Cowboys last
four games are non-conference
tilts they will not have much
chance to raise their conference
standings but could improve their
record a great deal.
So in spite of everything the
"coin" would like to "coin" an-
other quote this time from the
world renowned feature column-
ist and author of the BRANDING
IRON Bill Neal. Quote "Save-
your old Brands the Cowboys will
ride again". Unquote.
Pokes Drop Third
BC Tilt to NMA&M
H-SU's sparkless Cowboys
dropped their third straight BC
tilt last Friday night 56-43 at the
hands of the New Mexico Aggies
in Las Cruces.
Ronnie Ryan was high for the
Pokes as he bucketed 12 points
compared to nine for Barry King.
Leading the Aggies was Harry
Guthmuller who amassed a total
of 18 points which was good for
overall scoring honors.
Midway through the first half
the Cowboys led 16-10 but by the
time the intermission rolled
around A&M had pulled ahead
27-21.
At the three-quarter mark the
Aggies had pulled ahead 43-26
with Guthmuller leading them on
a 16 point barrage while the
Pokes could only hit on five free
attempts for five points.
In the final 10 minutes the
Cowboys struck for 17 points to
the Aggies 13 but never came
within threatening distance.
The loss which was the third
for the Pokes and shattered their
chances for the Border crown.
