After much planning and waiting on
the delivery of up-to-date exercise equip-
ment the new Hardin-Simmons
University Fitness Room in Mabee
Complex is now open. The facility has all
new equip-
ment which
includes 18
pieces of car-dio-equip-ment
and 10
different
pieces of
strength
equipment..
The Fitness
Room is open
to all faculty
staff and stu-
dents with a
valid HSU ID
card.
Coach
Patrick Lloyd
of the Recreational Sports Office on cam-
pus noticed only 10 people a week com-
ing in to work out on the old equipment
which had been in place for 25 to 30
years. Since the new room opened he has
seen 10 people every 20 minutes.
"We wanted to update the equipment
to give students a place to go to work out
to relieve the daily stresses that they

Lloyd also said that the new cardio-
equipment includes four treadmills six
stair climbers three upright bicycles

ceps forearms
abdominal mus-
cles and legs.

Dean's Dialogue
Strives for Racial
Understanding

Few took notice when two months
ago a small group of diverse Hardin-
Simmons University students began to
meet in the Student Organizations room
during their lunch hour on Wednesdays.
The weekly meeting was initiated by
Linda Carleton dean of students and sub-
sequently became known as "Dean's
Dialogue."
Carleton's goal was simple. She want-
ed to create a place where students could
go to discuss problems they saw on cam-
pus. She wanted Dean's Dialogue to be a
comfortable and relaxed atmosphere
where students would be encouraged to
talk freely and honestly with their peers
about any issue that was troubling them.
In this manner it was hoped that commu-
nication would open a door to greater
understanding and a more caring univer-
sity. "We are not going to change the
world. We are not going to end prejudice
and stereotypes. But we can promote
understanding" said Carleton when talk-
ing about the organization.
Dean's Dialogue is simply the most
recent in a long line of attempts to pro-
mote understanding among HSU students.
The meeting itself stems from an organi-
zation named "Unity Group." Unity
Group was also created to address any
issues on campus and was originally very
evenly divided among students of differ
