New Nurse Begins Work At HSU
by JeffEgger
HSU's new university nurse is
Gwendolyn Angel. She and her husband
Joseph moved to Abilene a month ago.
Joseph is a navigator aboard C-130S
stationed at Dyess. Prior to this they were
stationed in Sacramento.
Gwendolyn is a graduate of
Presbyterian School of Nursing in
Charlotte North Carolina. She said they
really like Abilene and "The people are
more friendly."
The university nursing facility is
designed to handle almost any problem a
student might have but is basically there
for immunizations such as tetanus
measles and flu vaccines. These cost $5
each.
The nurse provides counseling for
such things as weight problems school
difficulties and pregnancy. Other services
include dispensing over-the-counter drugs
arranging doctor's appointments for
students and arranging any health-related
activity on campus such as the blood
drive.
However the nurse's office is not
open 24 hours a day. Students who have
emergencies after hours should contact
their dorm director. If there is an
emergency there are minor emergency
clinics located at 3449 North 10th Street
and 3 101 South 27th Street and Abilene
Medi-Center is located on Texas Avenue
with doctors on staff until 8 p.m. For
major emergencies Hendrick Medical
Center is located just south of the
university.
For doctor's office visits Dr. Dawson
is the designated university doctor.
The nurse's hours are 9 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. Monday-Friday. Her extension is
1252.
Ross Johnson vice president for
student development has asked that
students come by Moody Center 201 and
welcome Angel personally.

New Business Building Dedicated
by Rick Hope
The Albert W. and Mary E. Johnson School of Business
was dedicated Oct. 4 in the Rupert H. Johnson Memorial
Conference Room which is located in the new building.
The idea for the project began when the late Dr. Rupert
Johnson a New York financier and HSU graduate offered the
University 2.25 million dollars in order to build a school of
business in his parents' honor. This offer was matched by the
J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation and the groundbreaking for
the building was held last year.
Dr. Jesse Fletcher HSU president opened the dedication
ceremonies by welcoming Joe Mabee a trustee of the Mabee
Foundation. Mr. Mabee expressed pleasure of the completion
of the building and expressed his appreciation and admiration
of HSU.
President Emeritus Dr. Elwin Skiles recognized the
members of the Johnson family and told some of their history
as well as some of his experiences with Rupert Johnson. He

Field House Dedicated Boards Meet
by Charles Richardson HSU Media Relations
HSU dedicated the Jake Sandefer Athletic Field House on
Sept. 21. Because of rainy weather the dedication ceremonies
were moved inside the $550000 building.
Members of the Board of Trustees and the Board of
Development their spouses and special friends of HSU
attended the brief ceremony which featured an address by
Jakie Sandefer (of Houston and formerly of Abilene) who
made the lead gift to construct the athletic field house that is
serving the football and baseball teams.
At a meeting the same day the trustees adopted for HSU a
"no smoking" policy effective Jan. 1 in campus buildings.
A drug and alcohol policy required by the U.S.
Department of Education was approved by trustees. The
policy forbids alcohol and illegal drugs on campus.
The trustees approved a policy related to AIDS which says
HSU "recognizes the serious threat of HIV infection and AIDS
to society and seeks to provide guidelines for the institution and
associated individuals."
