"An Evening of One Acts"
Charlie Hukill. designer-
technical director for Hardin-
Simmons University's theatre has
chosen an unusual format for its
spring production. Van Ellis
Theatre will hquse "An Evening of
One Acts" on April 16-20 with
the box office opening April 8 at 1
p.m.
"The one act play" states
Hukill "is a major form of drama.
Yet in the six years I've been in
Abilene the high schools have
been the principal producers of
the form. HSU directing students
produce them In the UIL format of
reduced emphasis on scenery
restricted lighting etc. But as
main stage efforts the colleges
and the community tend to"
neglect them for some reason."
So ignoring the torpedoes and
full speed ahead Hukill organized
a special topics class selected
three plays from the dozens he
read and will premiere the finish-
ed product April 16

porary comedies will be
"Chamber Music" by Arthur
Kopit. Labelled a comedy with a
serious ending the play focuses
on the proceedings of an inmate
grievance committee in an
asylum. Assorted daft and loony
ladies conflict over the best pro-
cedure for solving their problems.
Only gradually does it emerge that
one of the women is really who
she says she is
Dawn Mitchell plays Amelia
Earhart and Lavonna Martindale
is Pearl White. Barb Hendricks
portrays Joan of Arc and Rhonda
Smith is Susan B Anthony. Linda
Carol Sparkman pulls double duty
as Gertrude Stein and scene
designer for this play Cindi
Coates enacts Osa Johnson with
Lisa Singleton as Queen Isabella.
Debbie Byram fills the role of Frau
Mozart and Charles Bush has the
dual roles of Man in White and the
Assistant.
Since the majority of the action
centers on the women Hukill
believes that Kupit's purpose is to
explore the range of roles that
women have in a society beset
with a run-away technology.
The second offering James
Prideaux's "The Autograph
Hound" is being directed by
senior theatre-music major Bruce
Bennett According to Bennett the
play satirizes time killing activities
