The Wildcat track team has its
work cut out for them today at
the conference meet on the Mc-
Murry cinders. Early In. he sea-
son it looked like the Cats were o
cinch for the championship. How-
ever with a prolonged selge of in-
juries it will be a difficult job to
Whip the Howard Payne Yellow
Jackets.
A good many "ifs" stand be-
tween the Wildcats and a sweep
of the three major sports of the
Texas conference. Wildcat athletic
teams have already wrapped up
conference championships in foot-
ball and basketball.
If cither Mack Clark or Wcldon
.Hayes could recover from their
injuries to aid Chuck Smith with
a few points in the hurdles the
ACC team stands a good chance
of winning. If George Adrian or
Don Smith could break the tape
In the 100 and 220 ahead of How
ard Payne's Darrcl Townscnd the
Wildcat cause would certainly be
bolstered.
The 440 relay event could easily
be the deciding factor in deter-
mining the conference champ for
'53. At the Border Olympics the
Yellow Jacket 440 relay team beat
the Cats. At the Texas Relays the
Wildcats took the race. The Jack-
ets bounced back at the quadran-
gular meet staged here and won
over ACC. v

der way this afternoon at 2:00 on

mits.. Otherwise the matches will
be held in Bennety gym.
Parings were made early yes-
terday morning. Schools compet-
ing are McMurry Austin college
and ACC.
Number one man for ACC is
Max Leach Jr. and Houston
Goodspccd fills the number two
spot. They will both play singles
and then team up for doubles.
Strongest competition is expect-
ed by Coach Guy Scruggs from
Austin college nettcrs. Last year
Texas A&I made a clean sweep
winning both the singles and
doubles crowns.

send'is expected to be in tho HPC
lineup Friday night and ACC will
be minus Clark and Burl McCoy
and cither Arnold Falrlcy or Ted
Sitton will fill the vacancy.
Townsend rules as a slight fav-
orite to take the 100 and 220 yard
dashes but Smith or Adrian could
upset the dope and give the Wild-
cats two first places. Both races
should prove interesting.
On paper it looks like) this:
HPC to iako tho 100 220 880
mllo polo vault high hurdlos
and tho javelin. ACC is favored
in the 440 mllo relay high jump
.broad jump and iho 220 low
hurdles.
McMurry's Wayne Graham Is
the favorito in the shot anddis-
cus throw. Tho moot promises
lo bo almost a duplicate of last
year's meet which was won by
ACC on a final toss of tho jave
lin by Von Morgan. ACC had
62 '4 points lo'HPC's 62.
A new champion in the tennis
singles is in store for the Texas
conference with former cham
pions Glenn Shively of Texas
A&I and ACC's Jack Coleman out
of the picture. Tennis matches got
underway yesterday on the ACC
court and finals are scheduled for
this afternoon. The golf matches
were scheduled for Thursday and
Friday afternoon on the munici-
pal golf course.
Only three members of the Tex-
as conference arc competing this
year in track. Austin college and
A&I declined the meet because of
dead week at their institutions.
Austin college was not represent-
ed in track last year but A&I
was the host team for the TC
meet. A&I could possibly send
their weight man Bob Brandt.
Austin college Is represented in
tennis. v

For Saturday
Abilene Christian college will
seek its third athletic champion-
ship of the '52-53 season this af-
ternoon at 4:00 p.m. when they
play host to the Texas conference
annual track and field meet on
the McMurry track.
The greatest barrier between
ACC and the championship is the
strong Howard Payne team. Lact
year it was the Wildcats and Jack
ets who fought down to the last
event which decided tho cham
pion and a similar battle is ex-
pected tonight.
The Yellow Jackets loom as the
favorite to take seven of the fif-
teen events. ACC is favored to
cop some five firsts whlla Mc-
Murry is due two firsts. Ond of
the most Interesting races promis-
es to be the 440 yard relay with
the favorito being a toss up be-
tween the Jackets and tho Wild-
cats. Any hope the Wildcats have of
taking the conference depends on
the second third ond fourth
place winners since the Jackets
arc expected to take more first
places. Should McMurry knock
HPC from a first place in the mile
run the ACC hopes would be
strengthened.
Three weeks from tonight tho
preliminaries of the national meet
arc scheduled. Coach Jackson is
undecided now who ho will hold
over for the June 5-G meet. Last
season the Wildcats won the meet
and were recognized as national
champions.
