IFSB53JKaI8 0 Students' Association Elections
A-4
The statements appearing on this page
represent all of the candidates for Students'
Association offices who had filed petitions by 5
p.m. Wednesday. The statements were edited
for .style and in some cases length. SA elec-
tions will be April 15.
71 President
a 7 Matt Stroup
Junior banking and finance major; Inter-
social Club Council representative for two
years; Knights member; member of financial
resource committee of self-study program
needed for the continuing accreditation of
ACU; member of Business Administration
Council.
"I believe the president of the Students'
Association should be constantly aware of the
issues and problems facing the students. My
continual involvement in the activities on
campus has kept me on top of the current
issues.
"I am presently serving on the Business
Administration Council which oversees the
activities of business majors. Since one-fourth
of ACU students are enrolled as business
majors I am aware of the problems they
encounter and am working on the solutions.
"While I enjoy intramural activities I am
aware of some of the problems associated with
such a large undertaking. Because of my
intramural involvement I feel I can better
help to work on solutions to these problems. .
'Haying lived on campus the past three
years I have heard the different comments
made about improvements needed in campus
life and am also confronted with these same
problems.
"As president of the Students' Association I
will have the opportunity to implement the
solutions to the problems facing the entire
student body. Vote with confidence for the
candidate devoted to serving your best interests."
7 John Tyson
Senior Biblepre-law major; junior class
senator; spiritual life activities coordinator;
Galaxy member; vice president of Alpha Chi;
Student Bar Association member; Summester
steering committee member.
'"Next year will be a very important year for
ACU. Many important people will visit our
campus and many activities will take place. It
will in effect be a year of celebration. It will
be a year we can all look back on with fond
remembrances.
"In the midst of all the celebrations ac-
tivities and important people however we
will still go to class live in dormitories eat in
the Bean and do all the other things college
students are supposed to do.
"We as students will need strong leadership
to bring us. through this year and I am run-
ning for Students' Association president
because I think I can provide that leadership.
"It seems that campaign promises for
radical changes are generally made as
political devices to gain votes. I am not a
politician and I do not propose any radical
promises. I simply pledge to do the very best I
can with God's help to represent us well
provide us ' with quality social activities
service opportunities and a spiritual at-
mosphere. I solicit your vote and your con-
tinued support."
t Vice President
0 Danny Beasley
Senior oral communication major; junior
class senator; Galaxy member; coordinator
of Miami Spring Break Campaign; Alpha Chi
member; 1979 Homecoming committee
member.
"Doyyou care . . . who is next year's
Students' Association vice president?
Students in many places would answer "no."
The University of Wisconsin several years ago
elected a student government president who
had passed only a few classes and promised he
would do "absolutely nothing." In keeping
with a despondent country students don't care
because they don't believe.
"On the other hand I believe the students of
Abilene Christian University do care. This
institution overflows with students and faculty
who believe. We believe that all is not hopeless
that there are solutions. Improvements are
possible. Goals can be realized. Dreams still
come true. We may get discouraged but the
one thing we promise never to do is lose hope.
Dreams may seem remote goals distant but
the one dictate we demand is that we will
never give up.
"Like you I am a believer. I believe that our
optimism can be the catalyst igniting a flame
of hope of belief in our future. The SA vice
president is in a position to help see that the
dreams of this school become reality. I'd like
to represent you next year in the Students'
Association that believes it can make a dif-
ference." 7 Jack Rosenquist
Junior Bibleyouth ministry major;
president of Student Advisory Board;
Homecoming co-chairman; student annual
fund drive chairman; co-chairman of Student
Foundation public relations and development
committee; St. Louis Spring Break Campaign
chairman.
"The office of SA vice president is unique in
function and demanding in work load. It
requires dedication hard work and a strong
desire to serve the students at ACU. I believe
that I can offer the fulfillment of these
requirements along with some valuable
leadership experience to the Students'
Association.
"I believe in ACU and what it has to offer on
all levels: academic social spiritual. Each
student at ACU has his or her own perspective
on student government and how it can best
serve them. I would like to research these
needs and put some plans into action that will
meet students' expectations.
"The office of SA vice president could be an
excellent intermediary between the students
and the student government. I am prepared to
level with the students of ACU about their
student government and in doing so I want to
maintain an. atmosphere where everybody
feels free to level with me.
"I believe that I am a person who can get
things accomplished. I want to work hard to
serve as a leaderHappy are those who dream
and who are willing to pay the price to make
them come true.' I have a dream of being the
best SA vice president that I can be and I am
willing to work to make that dream come
true."
V Treasurer
V Jimmy Cawyer
Junior accounting major; vice president of
finance for Student Accounting Society; Alpha
Phi Omega member.
"The office of Students' Association
treasurer is one of critical importance to
students. He alone has the authority to
withdraw and dispense funds. But where do
these funds come from? Each full-time
student at ACU pays $4 to the Students'
Association fund. The money is yours and it is
my belief that it should be spent in your best
interests.
"Since it is your money I believe you should
know where and how it is being spent. I would
like to see regular budget reports printed in
the Optimist giving information on how your
money is being spent. I would also like to see
more feedback from you the students to your
representatives and to me directly on how you
feel about the way your money is being spent.
"Those who know me will tell you of my
dedication to tasks undertaken my strong
sense of responsibility and my earnest desire
to serve you as your treasurer next year. I
would greatly appreciate your vote and your
support in the election next Tuesday."
0 Kyle Cotton
Junior accounting major; freshman and
sophomore senator; member of Galaxy;
Alpha Chi member.
"The Students' Association treasurer is an
office that takes a great deal of time and in-
terest on the part of a student. His primary
responsibility is to take care of the financial
affairs of the Senate. I have had the past ex-
perience needed to fulfill this role in the
Senate. I am a junior accounting major and
have benefited from working under a CPA for
the past three summers.
"The SA treasurer also needs to have an
understanding of the workings of the Senate. I
was a senator for two years and this ex-
perience has enabled me to see what the
Senate can do for the students of ACU.
"One of the most valuable lessons I learned
as a senator was the importance of com-
munication between the Senate and the
students. This is where the SA treasurer could
play a big part. I believe that I can be effective
in getting feedback from the students.
"I realize the responsibility placed on the SA
treasurer and if elected I will try to serve the
student body to the best of my ability."
0 Jon Hubbard
Senior public relationsbiology major.
"What should I tell fellow students of
Abilene Christian that would convince them
that I should be their Students' Association
treasurer?
"Being SA treasurer requires a person who
not only is qualified to keep account of SA
expenditures but also is willing to work with
the SA president vice president and students.
You can count on me to be that person ! "
(Editor's note: Hubbard was given the same
opportunity to provide the Optimist with a
statement and background information as the
other candidates for SA offices. He declined to
furnish more than appears here saying he did
not believe it to be relevant. )
