New motivational program to begin next fall
A 2b hour program designed for
students who make a score of 15
or less on their American College
Testing (ACT) was approved last
week at the general faculty
meeting o
The program is designed to
help strengthen the educational
backgi ound of these students and
to improve their motivation and
learning abilities
ACU entrance requirements
state that a student must have a
composite score of 1C or better on
the ACT or have finished in the
top three quarters of their
graduating class
The Long Range Academic
Planning Committee headed by
Dr Clinton Hurley professor of
English conducted research that
indicates that approximately 25
pel cent of the incoming 1980
freshman class about 2r0
students will have an ACT scoie
of 15 or lower
The committee s research also
shows that of students with a
score lower than 10 only 15
percent will complete school and
many of these w ill be in school for
five years

to the academic council that a
program be designed specificly
to help these students succeed in
college The curriculum will
begin next fall
It will be optional next fall but
could become mandatory for
those with low ACT scores
"Later on we may recommend
changing the qualifications of
admission if this program is
successful but right now we are
not recommending any change in
admissions" Hurley said
"If we admit these students we
need to address their needs"
said Ed Brown vice president of
academic affairs "We do not
view this as lowering our ad
mission standards It is simply
far more honest with incoming
students "

include math modules basic
English a reading course an
adapted Bible class and possibh

for the progiam Life Learning
Skills hut it will be open to other

Wilson said The printing of the
fall course schedules has been the
primary reason for the delav in
preregistration
Copies of the fall course
schedule have been made and
will be posted within a few davs
at the registrar's office and on
the bulletin board in the Campus
Center
Graduate studentsjw-special
students and non graduating
seniors may begin returning-their
request cards between 8a m and
1 p m April 23 Course request
cards will be accepted from
juniors between 1 and 5 that
afternoon Sophomores may
return theircards on April 24 and
freshmen on April 25

success for any college student"

to work in organizations such as
the American Cancer Society the
American Heart Assosciation or

technical health fields It will
include health education courses
psy chology courses soctologv
courses and biolog courses
Hill said the new major had
been planned for about a year

demand for it among our
students he said 'It s a fairlv
new degree but it has been
established at other schools
