Gavel Clubbers Banquet
Saturday Night at Windsor
A formal banquet was given Sat-
urday evening in the Rose and Vic-
tory rooms of Hotel Windsor by the
Gavel Club for the members and
those entering the speech tourna-
ment. Jack Duncan president of the club
acted as master of ceremonies for
the program. Max Leach presented
the address for the evening which
was a talk on "Love" the theme of
the banquet. The mens' quartet of
the school (consisting of Jack Mc-
Kiney Ray McGlothlin Tex Ste-
vens and Robert Page) sang sever-
al numbers along the same theme.

were elected as the "honey-moon
couple." They sang Let Me Call You
Swctheart after which they were
each given a ring with a small heart
attached.
The evening was concluded with
the singing of the alma mater led
by the quartet.
Table decorations were nosegays
of sweetpeas on red hearts. Small
heart pins were favors and place
cards were in the form of marriage
licenses.
The menu included fruit cocktail
turkey and dressing lettuce and to-
mato salad rolls mince-meat pie
and iced tea.

'A' Club Initiates
Six New Members
Id Morlan Home
In the home of Dr. G. C. Morlan
club sponsor six new members were
formally initiated into the "A" club
in a candlelight ceremony Febru-
ary 12 1945.
The new members and their qual-
ifications are as follows O. J. Rus-
sell religious leader; R. L. Roberts
religious leadership; Wendell Need-
ham religious leadership; Arthur
Francis outstanding work in science;
W. A. Harrison band; Bob Bonkcs
ATL leadership. A seventh William
"Shorty" Lawson president of the
senior class was unable to be pres-
ent but will be initiated at our next
meeting. Dr. G. P. Bolcher was in-
vited to become an honorary mem-
ber because of his services as direc-
tor of athletics. He likewise will take
the pledge at our next meeting.
These new members raised the to-
tal student membership to wtelve
and places 262 names on the regular
membership roll. One "A" Clubber
Ben Adams did not return this se'
mester.
Refreshments of pecan pie and
coffee were served by Mrs. Morlan
to President Ed Kirk Foy Kirkpat-
rick Roy Deaver Wendell Broom
Jack Duncan and Max Leach and
the new members.
Taylor At Northside
The James A. Garfield chapter of
the Alpha Chi national scholarship
fraternity celebrated its twenty-third
birthday last Thursday nigh tat 7:30
with a banquet in the home eco-
nomics laboratory.
The dinner served by the Ellen H.
Richards Club consisted of steak
mashed potatoes beets lettuce salad
coffee and apple pie. The table was
decorated with blue and green crepe
paper and favors were small china
animals.
Ed Kirk president of the organi-
zation gave the welcome speech
and President Don Morris respond-
ed. The program included poems
read by Gaylan Collier and Jewell
Christine White. Paul Southern gave
the main address on The Making of
Books There is No End. Dr. Paul
C. Witt presented the new members
of Alpha Chi their shingles. This
was the first time new members
were presented their shingles on the
club birthday.
All members of Alpha Chi and
guests were present. Off-campus
guests included Mr. and Mrs. Floyd
Dunn Mrs. Paul Southern and Mrs.
Charles Floyd.
The singing of The Alpha Chi led
by Wendell Needham ended the banquet.
