DENTON COUNTY AS A WHOLE
With much of Denton County in need of terracing,
it would not be amiss to mention some of the principal
considerations in planning a terrace project. The first
attention should be given to the choice of locations for
outlets, to the types of control used in the outlet chan-
nel, and to the needs for water conservation. The sec-
ond item to consider is in regard to the design of the
terrace system which includes such things as the grade
of the terrace channel which depends on the type of
soil, the gradient of the land, etc.; the dimensions of
the ridge sections (average height about twenty inches
and width eighteen to twenty-four feet); and terrace
lengths, which varies with the type of soil. Perhaps
the third consideration in a terrace project would be
the actual staking of the terrace lines and structures.
Next, attention is given the design and construction of
diversion ditches, terrace channels, and dams in terrace
outlets. On slopes up to and including five per cent
the channels are strip-sodded. That is, strips of sod
are planted twelve inches in width and spaced four feet
apart. Bermuda sod is excellent for such strips. On
slopes up to ten per cent solid sod is used. At any rate
one can see that Denton County is fortunate in having
the C. C. C. and E. C. W. located here.
It is true, however, that all the farmers in the county
might not be in a position to sign up for C. C. C. help.
Perhaps there will be scores of such farmers who realize
