DENTON COUNTY AS A WHOLE
General farming is the main industry of the county.
Stock raising and feeding which are usually carried on
in conjunction with the production of general farm
crops, are engaged in to some extent. The principal
crops by rank in importance according to the 1930
census were these: cotton, corn, wheat, oats, peanuts,
sorghum, and barley. Small quantities of forage crops
are grown, also. Vegetables, fruits, and berries are
grown for home use, and some are sent to Dallas and
Fort Worth. The crop land in the county occupied by
various crops is as follows: cotton 26%; corn 13%;
wheat 16%; oats 15%; peanuts 3%; and truck, small
grains, barley, hay, fruit, and pecans cover 27 % of Den-
ton County. Wheat averages 21 bushels per acre; oats
44 bushels per acre; corn 25 bushels per acre; cotton
160 pounds of lint per acre. Out of the 4256 farms in
the county 60% of them get nearly half their income
from cotton; 30% of the farms get almost half their
income from small grains; 7% of the farms get their
income from diversified crop cultivation; while 3%
of the total number of farms for Denton County re-
ceive their income from dairying.
Most of the farmers in Denton County are white.
There are only 323 farms out of 4,255 operated by
negro farmers. Farm ownership in Denton county
makes a fair showing. Eleven hundred twenty-eight of
the white farmers own their farms. There are 261
