Chicago III April HBaln ln Kan
ft brok both the drouth and the
wheat market Compared with yes
tenia closing price the latter Is
1 1Se lower The large export trade
In wheat yesterdsy reported from
New York simmered down to about
thirty boat loads nothing In the way
ot esport business wns done ln wheat
there today and the market declined
teadlly all day with but few reac-
tions Com closed unchanged but
provisions finished higher all round
The drouth In the wheat pit which
caused the bears to swallow such co-
pious draughts of short wheat jester
< Ti was broken today Kansas got
general rains apparently covering the
entire state while the lower Missouri
valley reported a generous downpour
That without anthin else was suf-
ficient to obliterate the bullish feel-
ing which was so conspicuous jester
day afternoon The European drouth
canard also reoehed Its quietus It
was raining in England and there was
a low barometer oer the continent
Indicating a probability of general
rain there That left to the bulls only
the California drouth to hantr their
hopes upon and that was not enough
to prevent a lo break at the opening
May wheat which closed csterday at
61 38 < opened today with sellers at
from 60 6So down to CO 3Sc and no
bu > er at oer CO l2c
In half an hour from the opening
It had declined to 58 34c and did not
Show an signs of recovery until It
had reached that latter ptlce Along
with the bearish Influence of the rains
were market advices from Liverpool
reporting absoluto Indifference to yes-
terdays advance here A letter re
celved from Liverpool said that the
millers were getting Russian and Ar-
gentine wheat so low they could make
flour cheaper even than the very low
rates quoted from this side To offset
the foregoing was the news from Call
fornla August Broseau a wellknown
member of the board of trade who
has been traveling through that state
for six weeks sent the following tele-
gram from there to a friend this
morning The drouth hete H very
serious and In Northern California
cattle being given away
This had some effect In staying the
early decline The price reucted from
69 34c to 60 l4c The trade In the pit
compared with the pievious few da > t
business was light and the over
wotked brokers had time to take a
much needed rest
The closing Trie for May was 60 1S
C0 l4c The coin market was very
dull but prices were firm and were
scaicely Influenced by the weakness of
wheat
The Lh erpool market was quoted
weak with bujers holding off and
there was said to be no Eastern de-
mand but holders here iff used to give
way and there were no selling orders
of sufficient amount to overtop thuss
recelv ed on the bu Ing side The
drouth In California has already pro-
duced the effect of creating an In-
quiry for corn ln Nebraska to be
shipped to the Pacific coast May
corn opened here at 38 38o und closed
33 l2c after selling as high as 38 58c
Itecelpts toda were 168 cars There
was only a small business transacted
ln oats
The provision market was strong
with sellers rather scarce and for the
most part confined to those who had
a profit In previous purchases
