Un llroiiaht Mr re llnile In
the Work of 111 tlun
When the Katy train arrived here
from Whltesboro yesterday there
emerged from on of the coaches a
man who was got out of the Cooke
county Jail not a minute too soon and
whoso crimes committed within the
space of fortyeight hours have fairly
aroused the people of that county to
absolute frenzy The party referred to
Is John Q Crews the man who killed
Mr and Mrs John Murrell near
Oalnesvltle on Thursday morning then
rode to the house of Morgan Murrell
a Bon of his first victim seven miles
away shot hlm down in the field where
he was plowing and wound up his
bloody deeds by killing a farmer near
Thuckenllle In the same county A
Gazette reporter saw Crews In the
county jail at noon and heard him
tell the stcry of the killings which he
does not deny having committed
Crews Is a short tdlghtbullt man
weighing not to exceed 130 pounds Mi
exact height Its five feet seven and
onehalf Inches He has dark blue
eyes a sandy mustache dark brown
hair nnd Is not what would by any
means be called an Illlooking person
Tho right side of his face b ars evi-
dence of tho fact that he haa recently
been In close quarters being punctured
full of shot from the gun of Furmer
Meeks who attempted to arrest him
near Thackervllle yesterday aVternoon
Crews was perfectly unreiered In
telling his story and did not seem to
be at all alarmed when told that his
Interviewer wns a newspaper reporter
He gave his age as 4 and said ho wai
born In Duncan county Missouri where
he has many relatives With the ex-
ception of two years passed In Cali-
fornia and one y < ar In Colorado he
has lived in Cooke county and just
atiostt the Bed river In the Indian Ter-
ritory for tho past twelve years Get-
ting down to the details of the crimes
so recently commlttcod the man said
he wis matrled near OaltusMllc in
189S and bad mads a living since ns a
farm hand his wife always accom-
panying him He had worked for John
Murrell all together about five years and
wille they had quarteled seeral times
It was not until Murrell attempted to
debauch Crews wife that he made up
his mind to kill him Crews stated
that on April 4 Muriel enticed his
wife Into tho cellar of his farm house
and made an assault upon her but did
not succeed in cany Ing out his design
Murrells sons were tip stairs and
the woman was afraid to cry out
lest her husband would be killed
Munell had previously endeavoured to
Induce the woman to leave h < r hus-
band telling her that he would take
cttieof her Falling to separate Crews
and his wife he tried to drive the hus-
band off the plate but was thwarted
because he was afraid to attack Crowd
The prlsioner says that when his wife
told him how Murrell had treated her
he sent for ht < bi other to move him
and his effects away from the Murrell
place but pending his arrival Murrell
again attempted to entice his wife
away from htm He Bays that pre
loui to this time Murrell had appro-
priated a lot of household furnltute
nnd other property of himself and wife
which they had brought with them
when entering his employ and realiz-
ing or believing that the former in-
tended to rob him of all that ho held
dear he made up his mind to kill him
Thercfoie Crews says he armed him-
self with a Winchester went to tho
stable last Thursday morning crawled
up In the hay mow and lay In wait
fur bin tctlm About 4 oclock Munell
came to the barn and while he was
feeding the horse Crews fired the first
shot striking hm Just above the heart
Murrell fell but got on his feet and
started fort he door when Crews fired
again this time bringing him down
Crews sajs he Jumped down from hl
place of concealment went lo Mur
rells side who was still conscious and
told him why he had done tho deed
The wounded man was fatally shot
and while Crews was talking to him
Mrs Murrell who had heard the shoot-
ing came running towards the stable
Crews nay she had a Bpoon or fork in
her hand nnd made at him like an
Infuriated beast He cautioned her not
to come near him or he would kill her
She continued to advance however
nnd was so close to him when he Hi til
that she could have put her hand on
the rllle barrel
Borne time previous to this tingle
occurrence he had quarreled with
Morgan Murrell a son of the man
who lay dead In the stable and believ-
ing that he could stand ho show as
against the power of money and in
lluenre which tho dead man pos-
sessed as he thought he made up his
mind to make a cleap sweep and wipe
out the score against the son He
saddled one of Muirells horses
grasped his Winchester and started for
the homo of Moigan Murrell seven
miles aw ay In the bottom lauds of the
lied I lv er He found htm plowing
concealed hlms lf and shot him down
as he reached the end of a furrow and
wns turning hht team Crews says he
started for the Indian Territory but
as lie rode along and thought of the
enormity of his offenses and the re-
sult of his capture by those who would
seek summary vengeance In all prob-
ability he determined to give himself
up and take the consequences He
rode to within four miles of Thacker
UU when he dismounted to rest and
graze his horse In securing the ani-
mal ho laid down his gun and when be
looked up he saw farmer Meeks be-
hind a sapling with a shotgun pulled
down on him The farmer ordered
Crews to throw up his hands but In-
stead of doing so the latter sprang for
his Winchester Meeks fired but did
not hit Crews when the latter having
secured his gun shot Meeks through
the right breast Meeks fell on his
back and cried out to Crews not to
kill him Crews said he set his gun
down and as he did so Meeks sat up-
on the ground and deliberately 11 red
at him This was the shot that filled
his face full of lead Crews says that
maddened by the pain and not caring
particularly what became of him he
th n killed the farmer Faint from loss
of blood he was unable to leave the
scene for a time but eventually made
up his mthd to go to Thackervllle and
take the train for Gainesville and
give himself up ta tha sheriff While
buying his ticket at the station he waa
recognized nnd arrested as has al-
ready b en told In tn dispatches He
admits having killed a man named
Parmenter In California nineteen years
ago In a quarrel over some pasture
privileges but says he did it in seti
defense and has never been prosecuted
forthe ciime
Crews was brought here by Deputy
Sheriffs George Womack John O
Jlevw and H 1 Blackburn of Cook
county Mr Womack Bays that the
prisoner waa brought to tlalnenvllle
on a frtight train but did not remain
in the Cook county Jail to exceed one

a worthy helpmate to the ambitious
younglawyer who sought her hand In
157
Judge Harrison Q Hendricks was a
leading lawyer in that section of the
state Ills character of mind was pre-
disposed to precision of thought and
was made more argumentative and
forcible by hard study under favorable
conditions He moved from Sherman
to Fort Worth In IS85 He at once
Identified himself with nil movements
which pointed toward the welfare of
the young city
The South after the war was truly
great In the midst of ndverBlty
gleamed the Jewel in the toads head
nrosoerltv
Judae Hendricks was not slow to
Bee his advantages and within eight
years accumulated an estate valued at
fortyfour IliOOO thousand dollars
In company with Thos Scott of Phil-
adelphia the promoter of the Texas
and Pacific extension he traveled over
the country and with a prophetic eye
beheld Its future The time seemed
ripe for the fulfillment of Fort Worths
promise and he deeded a tract of land
to the proposed road which Is now
worth a great fortune
Ilut alasl for human ambition and
deslrr Fulling health presented the
claims of a higher court to Judge Hen
dricks and he answered the summons
In ltn hn the country was torn by
the great financial panic which over-
whelmed the country his mantle fell
upon the slender shoulders of his wife
From that day until her deah nne ever
had the prosperity of Fort Worth en-
shrined within the sacred recesses of
her heart
Jt was no until 18ft that the Texas
hnd Pacific railroad was graded to
Fort Worth from Eagle Ford whfert
It had slept bo long
From this time until the day when
the small band that are left of her eo
workers tarried her worn form to Us
eternal resting place she waa associa
o
ted with them In all they did for the
future of the town Ever ready with a
generous subscription toward public
enterprises her name Is side by side
with those farsighted men to whom
Fort Worth owes her prosperity
And Is this all Not so Above all
and through all she was a noble wo
man a faithful wife a devoted mother
and a true friend
The world Js poorer for her leavVig
It but our hearts are richer for her
memory
Farewell good frlendl
