short of other counties in agricultu-

ties inmineral and factory products
This showing bears out a contention
the Herald has long indulged in that
Anderson county is one of the richest
counties in natural resource s in the
state bjit we have never had suffi
dent country population to get the
results This county is Tich in min-
erals and abounds In the finest tlm
t bers for manufacturing and all that
but we have been slow in cultivating
our resources This county could pro-
duce leveA millions of farm products
as well as Ellis if it was filled with
progressive fanners The informa-
tion contained in this map Is worth
istudylng and while it makes a poor
showing for Anderson county it
should inspire greater effort on our
parts to mend the matter This coun
ty has enough of the finest Orange
burg tobacco soil to make it the rich-
est county In Texas if the land was
occupied and cultivated to its capac-
Ity Many people do not know of this
fine tobacco land or anything else
about our lands and we should make
strenuous efforts to acquaint all of
the country with such facts Instead
of Anderson county producing less
than two millions of farm products
sheshould be near the top of the col-
umn The opportunties are here and
all we need ar people to use the
plow and the hoe In short we need
to do more advertising The local
Board of Trade could well afford to
spehd a thousand dollars this year in
proclaiming the great value of our

i
Notwithstanding the passage of the
antirace track betting bill we have
not yet heard of the collapse of the
big state fair at Dallas as predicted
And we will not hear of it The fair
will go right ahead and be cleaner
and better than ever > That was a
weak and silly bluff In the mean-
time Anderson county should get an
exhibit ready for the fair
The rate law fight in Missouri is
not yet finished notwithstanding the
temporary victory for the roads The
case is to be taken to the supreme
court for final hearing The roads
satisfied the trial court that the pro-
posed rates under the state law did
not allow them a fair profit There
are two ways of figuring expenses
and profits for a railroad The roads
figure ascertain profit on all invest-
ments including bonds and stocks
while others contend that the stock
values should not be figured in on
the expenses That is probably the
point the higher court will settle
