THE WHISKY TRAFFIC
What is to bocomo of tho man who
drinks whiBky if tho world continuos
in tho future as it has in tho past to-
ward a gradual elimination of tho
drunkard from all reBpoctlblo pursuits
and all walks of life and1 business
which hold a chanco for happiness and
tho possibilities of livelihood
Within tho past ten yoars thoro bae
been a Btoadily increased demand ia
tho business world for the man who
does not drink whisky and by tho s atne
proportion a steady decline in tho de-
mand for tbo services of a man who
does drink whisky It is not1 so very
long ago that drunkards were found in
every sort of business and tho man
who employed him gave but little care
to what he did with his idlo time To-
day thereis a vaBt difference in this
respect and tho tendency grows con-
stantly Thoro is no other conclusion
but that tho world haB no use for a
drunkard True it neverhad perhaps
but in former days itwas considered no
ones business if a man took a drink or
two occasionally Now it is realized
that drunkards are made from the men
who take a drink or two now and then
The man who never drinks inoyer be
comes ndrunknrd Likewise no man
ever took his first drink with a view of
eventually developing himself into a
firstclass drunkard Somehow ambi-
tion never runs in that direction But
the world today has no use for the
drunkard and what is more to the
point the world is gradually losing in-
terest in the man who drinks a little
One needs but to look aboiit totest the
truthfulness of this conclusion Go to
v
the general offices of a railroad and
consult with the manager regarding
your employment as an engineer His
first question will not be whether you
know your business whether yomhave
brains enough to run an engine or
whether you are of sound mind or
crazy he will ask you if you drink Not
whether you get drunk but whether
you drink If you drink he will inform
you that there is nothing for you to do
Seek employment as a bookkeeper in
some large establishment and tell tbo
proprietor that you are not a drunkard
but that you fdrink occasionally and
sometimes get drunk say on Christ-
mas New Years and one or two other
times a year Do you think you would
get a job Go to a largo dry goods
bouse and ask for employment as a
salesman behind the counter Tell tho
proprietor that you drink occasionally
Do you think you would be employed
Go to a bank if you are a young man
and ask for a position as collector and
explain that you want to grow up in
the banking business While you are
talking the cashier or president de-
tects tho odor of whisky on your
breath Do you think ho will take you
in Go to any employer ah yes go to
the proprietor of a saloon and ask for a
position as bartender Tell the pro-
prietor you drink rather steady hut get
drunk only occasionally Do you think
you would get tho job You would
stand less show there than you wouldin
the bank Where then is the place
which seeks the man who drinks Who
wants him in society Where can he
go find a welcome Nowherevon this
earth and but to one of tho two adver-
tised places in the other world The
truth of tho matter is the world is down
on the whiskeydrinker
And why shouldnt it be What use
is he Let it bo assumed that be is
tho brainest the smartest most capa
ble and most efficient manyou can se
cure for the place Put him in a re-
sponsible position and the day will
come sooner or later and most likely
when responsibility rests greatest upon
him when he will have pawned his
brain his sentiment his hody and soul
to whisky The man who drinks whis
ky is not tho judge of the timo when ho
will get drunk When you require his
services most then will he be found
wholly incapacitated when least ex-
pected he is untlt for work >
To show the gradual tendency to
frown on the drinking man inltho busi-
ness world one but needs to recall what
would be tho consequence to a bank
who employs a cashier who drinks
Suppose you bad your savings in a
bankjand by chance you sawthecaBbier
nnder the influence of whisky Would
